What are the most effective ways to lead a team in advertising?

The first thing for any leader is for a team to believe in what you are trying to achieve and to trust you. Without this first step it will be an uphill battle and unlikely to succeed.

One of the most unfortunate realities of the creative industry: We don't educate creatives on how to transition from being a maker to a leader. I can think of three core skills of being a leader that are OPPOSITE of what it takes to be a successful creative. 1) Empathy: If you've been around long enough, you know what a stressful, precarious career this can be. Treat your team with care. 2)Ego: Park your ego at the door when you're a leader. This also means STOP making. You're the conductor now, not a soloist. Even with great intent, you're robbing your team of the experience they need to hone their craft. 3)Trust: Creatives can't be their best in an environment of fear. Foster a culture where excellence is expected, but so are mistakes!

Having led marketing teams for +15 years, I’ve set a clear framework for effective communication and leadership. Happy to share them below. Clear vision: Articulate a clear vision and goals. Empowerment: Trust and empower or better "enable" the team. Happy to explain in more detail what I mean by that. Data-driven decisions: Base strategies on data and insights. I’m my experience I have seen too many C-Levels, Directors, and Senior Managers that are too involved on daily tasks and problems that they shouldn’t be concerned with. This shows some insecurity in not being informed or not knowing what is happening in the tranches. Senior management should focus on the next 3-5-10 years and with that build a clear vision and make sure to communicate the direction with the rest of the team. With that clear vision properly communicate, an entire system of delegation, check points, and continuous improvement should be put in place to guarantee the company is heading to the planned direction. Don’t micromanage! Communicate, delegate, trust, and have quarterly checks to make sure everyone is on the right track

Based on my professional experience, I have found that when you place trust in individuals and grant them ownership over their tasks, they are often empowered to surpass expectations, delivering outcomes that far exceed what one might initially consider achievable. This approach involves allowing them to address problems that can realistically be solved, thereby fostering a sense of responsibility and creativity. By doing so, it encourages a culture of problem-solving where individuals feel valued and motivated. In the current managerial landscape, effective delegation is key. It's vital for managers to set the direction for their teams without micromanaging each step. The abundance of AI tools further simplifies this process. A good practice is to embed crucial prompts and keywords in your team briefings. This method not only empowers your team but also promotes their growth by combining self-driven research with AI assistance. Cultivating a 'Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Culture' encourages team members to anticipate questions and perform self-checks before commencing tasks. This approach reduces the need for micromanagement and fosters independent problem-solving.

Leading a global and fully remote team requires trust, responsibility and transparency. The way I nurture creativity and innovation involves Creating a great environment: Providing resources and space that inspire creativity. Always encourage experimentation: Valuing every idea and exploring various approaches. Testing never fails! Embracing diversity: Seeking diverse perspectives for more creative solutions. Welcoming feedback: Using constructive feedback for continuous improvement. Celebrating outcomes: Acknowledging both successes and failures as learning opportunities.

I often ask, "What feeds your creativity?" It's essential to engage with diverse content across various mediums, aiming to enrich the mind. Being open to different perspectives and understanding them is key. Sharing your approach and what you consume with team members can spark inspiration, leading to mutual learning. Creativity exists in everyone on different levels, whether singing in the shower, performing karaoke with friends, performing concerts, or teaching music. Treat every activity as a chance to exercise creativity. Never dismiss any idea, as it could potentially be the "next big thing".

I've led several teams and if there's one thing that's helped me stay on top of my game and brought out the best in my team; it's allowing each team member bring their superpower to the table. Every skill set and perspective counts. Stay agile, embrace the chaos, and lead with passion.

El mejor tip para el equipo creativo es hacer un trabajo de campo ocasionalmente acompañados de la fuerza de ventas, así entenderán mucho mejor las necesidades del cliente y podrán tener más y mejores ideas. Recordemos que para ser creativos necesitamos abrir nuestra mente y eso es muy difícil detrás de un escritorio 8 horas al día. Recuerda que no hay una fórmula exacta para lograr el objetivo con cada campaña, se trata de aplicar tu experiencia, probando y errando. No le temas al fracaso, finalmente es ahí donde está el mayor aprendizaje.

Essentially, aligning your actions with your set tone is key to a cohesive and effective organization.

I lead by example with each team in order to be successful. Leading by example initiates a culture of trust and support, laying the groundwork for a cohesive team. This foundation ensures that team members not only respect but willingly follow their leader. In this environment of mutual trust and encouragement, a leader's actions become a guiding force, inspiring the team to emulate the same principles and contribute collectively to shared success.

Individual autonomy, displays of how each team member is valued, deliberate and intentional listening to each team member. Additionally, clear expectations is an absolute must if possible. Lastly, you need to provide constructive feedback outside of mandated performance reviews. Annually or semi-annually is not enough. After each completed or failed task should be the standard to maintain vision and direction of the marketing strategy.
