Identify sustainable alternatives that complement these materials without compromising their aesthetic or structural qualities. Engage with local artisans and stakeholders to ensure the materials used reflect both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary environmental standards. Develop design solutions that integrate traditional elements with sustainable practices.

In my experience, traditional materials don’t go well with modern technology as today’s principles are more of getting a quick solution than a sustainable solution in many cases it might not be true but majorly the focus must be on developing some new materials that can benefit the idea of sustainability and also adapt to new technologies !!

Some of the more traditional materials whilst often tried and tested by vernacular builders for ages, are not recognized as sufficient or compliant by local building standard’s authorities and will not be accepted in building plan submissions. Despite being proven in time they need to be submitted for testing by the building standard’s testing authority and pass those tests before they can be part of the design proposal that will achieve an approved building plan application. Site made mud blocks for example, will vary from site to site due to differing soil and site manufacturing, and need to be tested and certified by the local authority.

This is hat is moste intersting and IT iss the added value of the contemporary architect to achieve this. Whatever the aesthetics you are looking for !

Sustainable materials are the keystones of environmentally responsible design, providing essential solutions for reducing ecological impact while enhancing the longevity and performance of structures. Opt for materials like reclaimed wood, bamboo, or recycled metal, which minimize waste and resource consumption. I feel sustainability has two perspectives , one is the product or the material the consumer uses must sustain for a long period to reduce regular generation of waste or the materials must positively decompose in the landfills making the environment cleaner and sustainable for the future generations. We are used to plastics it has become a part of our life no matter how much ever alternatives come in, Plastics are still going to rule the world the catch is to make those plastics more friendly to the environment by fusing environmental attributes to these polymers.

When identifying sustainable alternatives, aim to match the aesthetics and functionality of traditional materials by selecting eco-friendly options that closely resemble or complement the original ones. For instance, reclaimed wood can offer the same visual appeal as newly sourced timber while being more environmentally responsible. Additionally, hybrid solutions that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern sustainable practices should be considered. An example might be using natural stone combined with advanced insulation techniques, which preserves the traditional look while enhancing energy efficiency. This approach ensures that the design remains true to its cultural roots while embracing sustainability.

Being an industrial designer I feel designers are coming with fusion of nature and technology and also taking inspiration from the ancient work for example there some architectural projects which Dose not need an A/c the walls are designed to regulate the air such that it mimics the work of AC such designs are inspired by ancient buildings ( ex.hawa mahal in Rajasthan ,India )

Cuesta mucho que los políticos entiendan que un buen proyecto de espacio público no se acaba con el final de obra, sino que continua a lo largo de toda la vida del espacio público, con su mantenimiento. Muchas veces no están en contra de hacer proyectos urbanos donde la renaturalizacion y los materiales sostenibles sean elementos centrales del diseño, sino que están en contra de proyectos en los que el mantenimiento sea mayor. Por eso las plazas duras tienen tanto éxito, porque solo hace falta que alguien las barra.

The key principle of any design of structures that would serve mankind is to be sustainable and eco-friendly. To achieve there are many possible ways, one best is to observe nature's designs by geometric or structurally. Such designs are existing and continue to exist.
