How do you prioritize sustainability and aesthetics in building design?

Respecting local context is the best way to begin a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing building design. Missing local geographical context, cultural context and climatic conditions can result in design that charges human sense and needs. It can also help maintain building aesthetics that are functional as well.

Initial impression of a building comes from its visual appeal, so sustainability and aesthetics can be conveyed via the right materials. In our renovation project, material selection followed the 3 R’s of sustainability: REUSE: We minimized waste by salvaging existing building’s thermal layer and cladding supports. REDUCE: Opting for lightweight fluted perforated metal panels for the new cladding not only reduce material use but also added sturdiness through clever geometric design. RECYCLE: Terrazzo panels with embedded recycled ceramics formed the majority of the interior wall covering of the renovated lift lobby.

Un bon choix de matériaux est souvent le gage d'une belle architecture. Il y a néanmoins des paramètres importants à considérer dans la conception. Les matériaux adaptables au climat, à l'environnement et aux techniques de constructions, localement éprouvés en premier lieu. Le réemploi peut également être satisfaisant dans la mesure ou il participe à la réduction des déchets et peut conduire à valoriser esthétiquement et/ou techniquement un projet. La prise en compte, en amont, de ses multiple contraintes, est un espace de création permettant de donner du caractère aux matériaux employés dans un projet architectural.

La performance énergétique d'un projet se conçoit principalement au travers de facteurs environnementaux. Selon les possibilités, on choisira la meilleure orientation, la meilleure lumière et une volumétrie adaptée. On privilégiera les situations traversantes, la ventilation naturelle.. Néanmoins, le site, le contexte, le cadre réglementaire ou encore le financement d'une opération sont cruciaux dans l'élaboration d'une conception "performante". Il appartient alors aux concepteurs d'élaborer une stratégie (et pédagogie) constructive qui réponde tant aux besoins des commanditaires, qu'aux désidératas sociétaux.

In my architectural projects, I prioritize the harmonious integration of landscape and building to enhance both sustainability and aesthetics. In a recent project, I strategically positioned trees and plants to create natural ventilation and cooling, significantly reducing energy consumption. Additionally, I designed green areas that promote biodiversity and external spaces that encourage social interaction. By following these steps, you can effectively communicate and align with your client, creating a foundation for a successful and environmentally conscious lighting project. Ensure to clearly record all the steps and goals of the projects to keep track and move forward in a clear direction.

By incorporating visualization and well-thought-out layouts into their designs, designers can tailor their approach to suit the unique needs of each client. Additionally, carefully planning the layout of information on a page can enhance comprehension and engagement, ensuring that clients receive the necessary information to understand the concept being presented. By considering these factors, designers can create impactful designs that resonate with clients and effectively convey key messages.

Actually, getting the building orientation right and considering sun angle and cross ventilation, could account for 60 percent of sustainability efforts. Everything else is only to improve on that initial site planning

For me a design/ project is sustainable if it performs the function the spaces are designed for, to client’s satisfaction . The built spaces should address good health and well being of the users . Aesthetics can be very subjective but a keen eye for detail is what makes any project aesthetically appealing. No need to use fancy or very expensive products but keep the detailing simple which your labour team can execute and the design will turn out aesthetically pleasing.

One thing i can add to this whole convo is that sustainability doesn't mean just to design building with respect to active/passive energy ways. To me sustainability means to incorporate the values the context contains along with people who have been part of that particular site for so long. Sustainability means to conserve the heritage whether its just a small stone wall. In one of my hotel project in northern area, we not just conserve the old constructed house and regain its old glory but we conserved a 10 feet by 5 feet high stone wall and make it a statement that we are here not just to design but to sustain the context as well. Whole hotel design is green certified but loving and respecting context is part of sustainability.

@Michael Wang. I concur, from basic principles of sustainability the 1st rule is to reduce demand i.e. passive strategies like orientation and natural cross ventilation. However, with air pollution in cities like Bangkok, natural ventilation is not really possible i.e. people are advised to stay indoors. What are your views on that?

Passive design strategies are pertinent to ensuring a sustainable/environmentally friendly building. Orientation of the building to allow for natural light in different seasons is crucial to the efficiency of the home.
