Plans, similar to budgets, are malleable structures. Going into an event, whether new or old, making sure we cross all the T's creates our cornerstone. When I was new to live events, I'd obsess over what could go wrong. Fast forward to today, I almost plan for some slack in the plan, so the event can unwind organically. Because no matter how much we plan — life happens.

Team leadership stems from self-awareness and accountability. Are you a front-leading leader? Well, act accordingly. Those leaders who are more reserved, should be aware of such and plan for how your strengths/weakness will impact the event. And I've heard board members tell stories about how our leader is lacking in certain managerial aspects. That's fine, but it's not an excuse to fail to fill in the gaps you know are present. And as leaders, we need to be overly accountable. I can't even count how many times I took responsibility for an error at an event simply because I was hosting it for my company. During a live event, I refuse to pass the buck. And that goes for the assessment after the event hall is empty.

In the early days of event planning I'd have almost everything accounted for: the venue was tip-tip shape, I was usually overstaffed and I'd lose sleep over every second I could imagine before the event. After year one of event planning for me I knew that I forgot the key ingredient for live events. Fun! Plan some darn fun! Isn't that the point of getting people together for a common purpose? So when I plan for fun at my company picnic these days, I'm much more flexible when an issues crops up. And if you fail to schedule fun at your happenings, please plan it for your guests.
