Earlier this week we shared adorable printable notes to send with your kids for back to school. You can download them free here.

Today we’re sharing another adorable way to send your kids a special note in their lunchbox — this time, no printer is required. It’s probably the easiest possible way to send your kid some love from afar.

All you need is a fruit (which you’re most likely sending into school with them anyway), and a marker, then write directly on the fruit peel! That’s it! For peels that are not edible, use a regular black sharpie. For peels that are edible, wash the fruit very well to remove any wax sealer, and use an edible marker.

Tip for washing off wax from fruit:

Some fruits like apples might need the wax washed off of them before you write. You’ll need a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda. Mix together to form a paste. Using a paper towel or veggie brush apply some of the paste to the apples and scrub gently to remove wax. Rinse in water and pat dry with paper towels. Using the edible marker, apply the wording to the apples. Let it dry for a few hours before transferring.

Our favorite cute sayings:

For a banana- “Smile like a banana”
For an apple- “You are the apple of my eye”
For a pear- “You are Pear-fect”
For an orange- “Orange you glad it’s lunch time”
