Opioid Awareness

The national opioid epidemic has hit every state very hard, including Michigan. In its most recent form, which is dominated by the synthetic opioid fentanyl, more people are dying from drug poisonings than any time in the past.  The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan is addressing this epidemic through a variety of outreach programs, in addition to criminal prosecutions and civil litigation.  For example, the Office provides opioid educational presentations to schools and professional organizations and issues public service information through media outlets. Anyone interested in scheduling a presentation should feel free to contact the Office. The resources listed below offer further information for community organizations and individuals looking to understand and address this epidemic.

The MSP Angel Program allows an individual struggling with drug addiction to walk into an MSP post during regular business hours and ask for assistance. If accepted into the MSP Angel Program, the individual will be guided through a professional substance abuse assessment and intake process to ensure proper treatment placement. An “Angel” volunteer, who is a member of the local community, will be present to support the individual during the process, and to provide transportation to the identified treatment facility. All MSP posts are currently participating in the Angel Program.
