Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Berlin
The Kiel Institute in Berlin serves as an international hub in the capital and a link to the federal political landscape. Centrally located in the district Berlin-Mitte, in proximity to federal ministries, Berlin universities, and think tanks, the office is designed as a vibrant meeting point for collaborative research and interdisciplinary exchange. Guest researchers meet with researchers from the Kiel Institute and Berlin institutions, as well as representatives from federal politics, business, and media. The Kiel Institute regularly hosts events in Berlin to share and discuss cutting-edge research findings for the global economy and to create an active network of scholars, policymakers, business, and media representatives informing evidence-based global economic policy. Our activities range from research seminars and workshops to fireside chats and academic conferences.
Kiel-CEPR Research Hub
The Kiel Institute in Berlin also serves as a CEPR research hub. The Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit organisation working across Europe to improve the quality of policy-making by providing policy-relevant economic research to policymakers, the private sector and civil society. The network consists of more than 1,700 researchers from universities, research institutes, central bank research departments and international organizations.
The goal of the Berlin Hub is to promote and disseminate the top-level economic research of both organizations. We organize joint conferences, workshops and the Kiel-CEPR Research Seminar with a technical focus on the content of the CEPR Research Policy Networks (RPNs) on Geoeconomics and International Sovereign Bonds and Debt, led by Moritz Schularick and Christoph Trebesch of the Kiel Institute.

GREIX (German Real Estate Index)
Research for more transparency in the real estate market: The GREIX (German Real Estate Index) describes the development of real estate prices in Germany.
It provides unlimited and free access to high-quality property price indices for German cities. These indices are based on data from the purchase price collections of the appraisal committees for property values, which record notarized purchase contracts, and are updated quarterly.
The GREIX is a project of the MacroFinance & MacroHistory Lab, which is funded by the DFG-funded Bonn-Cologne Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute and carried out in cooperation with the local expert committees.
MacroFinance & MacroHistory Lab
The MacroFinance & MacroHistory Lab explores macrofinancial issues from a historical perspective. Researchers at the Lab study the causes and consequences of financial instability and rising debt, the evolution of income and wealth inequality, as well as economic history, political economy, and real estate markets.
The Jordà-Schularick-Taylor Macrohistory Database provides comprehensive coverage of long-run macroeconomic and financial data for 18 countries since 1870. We provide open access to the data under a Creative Commons license.
The Lab's research has been published in prestigious journals such as the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Review of Economic Studies. Its researchers have won numerous awards, including the Leibniz Prize, the Gossen Prize, the Unitcredit Econ Job Market Best Paper Award, the Best Doctoral Tutorial Award of the European Finance Association, and the Engerman-Goldin Award of the Economic History Association.
Former PhD students and postdocs of the lab hold positions in leading departments and policy institutions in Europe and the US.
