Hoeven Hosts Secretary Carson in Grand Forks, Spirit Lake
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – On Wednesday, August 7, Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and a member of the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Committee, will host Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson in Grand Forks and Spirit Lake Reservation. The senator is bringing Carson to the state to see local housing projects and give local government and tribal officials an opportunity to provide direct input on HUD’s programs.
Tour of LaGrave on First
On Wednesday morning, Hoeven and Carson will tour LaGrave on First, a recently-opened housing and supportive service facility developed by the City of Grand Forks and the local housing authority. Hoeven worked with Carson to secure a waiver for the project, which helped keep its construction on schedule and allowed it to advance using HUD’s HOME program and Section 8 project-based vouchers.

Housing Roundtable
Following the tour, Hoeven will hold a roundtable with Carson and local housing officials and service providers, giving them an opportunity to provide direct input to the secretary on HUD’s programs, local needs and opportunities to make more effective use of federal funding.

Tour of Fort Totten
Later that morning, Hoeven and Carson will tour Fort Totten with Spirit Lake Chairperson Peggy Cavanaugh and other tribal officials, where they will review the tribe’s efforts to combat homelessness and related issues. As chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, Hoeven has worked with HUD, USDA and other agencies to improve support for tribal housing programs, including for Native American veterans.
