The British Embassy in Damascus is unable to provide any consular assistance as operations have been suspended and diplomatic personnel have been withdrawn.

We currently advise against all travel to the Syrian Arab Republic. British nationals in Syria should leave now by commercial means while they are still available. We cannot help you leave Syria. Those who choose to remain in Syria or to visit against our advice should be aware that we cannot provide consular assistance in country.

If, despite our very clear advice to leave now, you choose to travel to Syria, or stay there, you should make sure you and your family enter Syria legally with the appropriate visa, and have a valid exit stamp on your travel documents if you need one.

Getting help

Any British nationals requiring urgent consular assistance can visit the Embassy of any EU member state in Damascus, or in an emergency contact the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in London.

We prioritise emergencies and people who are vulnerable, for example, if someone’s:

  • ill, injured, or involved in a crime

  • with a British person who’s died

Visas

The UK remains committed to engaging with the Syrian people, even though we do not have a functioning embassy in Damascus. One unfortunate consequence of the closure of our embassy is that Syrians now have to travel to another country to obtain a visa for the UK. But we continue to welcome applicants via our visa centres worldwide. More details are available on the UK Visas and Immigration.
