The British Embassy in Kabul suspended in-country operations in August 2021. All UK diplomatic and consular staff were withdrawn from Afghanistan.

The UK Mission to Afghanistan is co-located with the British Embassy in Doha, Qatar.

We are continuing to support British nationals and people eligible under the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP) and the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS).

We are also working closely with the international community to support the Afghan people.

Urgent assistance

British nationals in Afghanistan

Getting help

If you cannot get the support you need from local services, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) can help British people abroad.

We have suspended all operations at the British Embassy in Kabul. Our consular assistance can only be provided remotely and is extremely limited.

We prioritise emergencies and people who are vulnerable, for example, if someone’s:

  • ill, injured, or involved in a crime

  • with a British person who’s died

You should also read the travel advice for Afghanistan, and sign up for email alerts to see the latest updates.

You can access full consular services at our embassies and consulates in neighbouring countries. However, all travel throughout Afghanistan is extremely dangerous, and border crossings may not be open.

Vulnerable non-British nationals needing assistance

If you are a vulnerable non-British national in Afghanistan needing assistance, view our Afghanistan support page. This includes details on the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) for former locally employed UK government staff in Afghanistan, and other vulnerable Afghans.

If you are a non-British national in Afghanistan or are the family member of a non-British national in Afghanistan, and you need assistance, call +44 300 790 6268 (or 0300 790 6268 in the UK).

Other support for Afghan citizens

The Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) will also welcome up to 20,000 at-risk Afghans to the UK in the coming years.

Afghan citizens cannot apply directly to this scheme. The UK government will grant eligibility to them through 1 of 3 referral pathways. For further information read the ACRS guidance.

Development work with Afghanistan

Afghanistan is facing a serious humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations, over 18 million Afghans, almost half of the population, are at ‘crisis’ or ‘emergency’ levels of severe acute malnutrition.

The UK is working to provide Afghans with life-saving aid, and we remain fully committed to supporting Afghanistan and its people.

Our funding is primarily channelled through international organisations, and no funding will go directly to the Taliban.
