Disabled access to the British Embassy Berlin
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and this embassy are keen to ensure that their buildings and services are fully accessible to disabled members of the public. Wherever possible, we have made our buildings and services accessible. Sometimes however, this is not possible due to security or other restrictions. In these situations we will endeavour to provide a service or access to a building in an alternative way to ensure equality of access for disabled people. To assist disabled visitors, we have set out below details of disabled access at this embassy. We hope this information is helpful.
General physical access
The British Embassy Berlin is a modern building that has been designed and built with many features to aid disabled customers in mind. There are, however, some points that you will wish to take note of if you plan to visit us.
- our entrance is clear and unobstructed. You can access the public areas of the embassy and the consulate with wheelchairs
- wheelchair access to the public area of the embassy (Wintergarden) is gained by using the lift and a permanent ramp with handrails. You will be accompanied at all times
- the lift is available to all floors of the embassy and is fully accessible to wheelchair-users. You will be accompanied at all times
- the consulate and the Wintergarden are equipped with toilets specially designed for the needs of wheelchair-users and those with limited physical mobility
- the public areas of the Consular Section, including the counter and interview room, are easily accessible to those in wheelchairs or with physical disabilities
- the lift and all interior and exterior stairways are fitted with handrails
- we have no public parking but if you would like to come by car please contact the Management Section about parking
- floor coverings within the embassy are safe and even
- please be aware there are fire/smoke doors within the office corridors and they are heavy and not easy to use for those with mobility impairment, but to assist you, you will be accompanied at all times. There are no such doors in our public areas
- the building is well lit
- the embassy is fitted with emergency alarms and arrangements are in place for assisting disabled visitors in case of emergency/evacuation. Members of staff will help you to leave the embassy
- there are two telephones in the consulate and one in the public area. They are at standard height but staff will help you using them if necessary
Access for visually impaired and deaf/hard of hearing visitors
- signs within the embassy are mostly clear and easy to read in both German and English. Some of the statutory notices in the Visa/Consular Section are, however, not ideally formatted for the visually impaired. Please ask if you require any help with any information within the embassy
- hearing loops, minicom and textphones are not installed
- we don’t have an internal interpreter for sign language but we can hire one. Please contact Corporate Services Section or JCI (if you are planning an event in the embassy) in advance
- guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome
