Getting help

If you cannot get the support you need from local services, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) can help British people abroad.

We prioritise emergencies and people who are vulnerable, for example, if someone’s:

  • ill, injured, or involved in a crime

  • with a British person who’s died

If your passport has been lost or stolen

If you’re abroad and your passport has been lost or stolen, damaged or expired, and you cannot get a new or replacement passport in time to travel, apply online for an emergency travel document.

If a British person dies in France

Read this guide for what to do if a British person dies in France to help you through the practical arrangements you need to follow after a death in France.

If you’re dealing with the death of a child, multiple deaths, a suspicious death or a case of murder or manslaughter, or have read the guide and feel you need more support, contact us.
