Renew your registered design
You must renew your design registration on its fifth anniversary. You’ll then need to renew every 5 years up to a maximum of 25 years.
You’ll be charged a fee to renew.
If you do not renew up to 6 months before or within one month after the renewal date, you’ll also need to pay late payment fees.
You can make a ‘late renewal’ up to 6 months after the renewal date by paying £24 for each complete month that’s passed on top of the renewal fee.

You’ll need to pay the full fee for each design you renew.
Renew online
You can renew your registered design online.
You’ll also be able to renew trade marks and renew patents at the same time.
Renew by post
Fill in the design registration renewal form and post it. The address is on the form.
You’ll get confirmation of your renewal when the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) receive your form and payment.
Restore a design after the late renewal deadline
If you missed the 6 month deadline for late renewal, you have a further 6 months to apply to ‘restore’ your design.
You must give a good reason for why you missed the deadline.
Fill in the application to restore a design and post it, along with a written explanation of why you did not renew on time. The address is on the form.
Each application costs £120.
What happens next
You’ll get a decision letter in the post. You will not get your money back if your application is turned down.
You’ll be able to renew your design as normal by sending a design registration renewal form if IPO agrees your explanation is valid.
You’ll get confirmation and your design will be published in the design journal once IPO receives your renewal payment.
