Mia Marzouk

Biography

Mia has worked on and in the Western Balkans for over 20 years. She previously served in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office as Regional Conflict Adviser based in Sarajevo (2019 to 2022), and as Senior Research Analyst on the Balkans in London (2015 to 2019). She was Head of Security Issues for the London Summit 2018.

Prior to joining the FCDO, Mia worked as an external consultant on security-related issues, particularly in the Western Balkans. She lived in Pristina for 2 years, focusing on security and serious and organised crime. Mia also ran the Balkans programme at Saferworld, an international non-governmental organisation(NGO) and served as European Security editor at Jane’s Information Group.

Throughout her career, Mia has consistently engaged with Balkan NGOs, politicians, and think tanks, seeking to learn from their expertise. Mia holds a BSc in International Relations and an MSc in European Studies from the London School of Economics.

She speaks conversational Albanian and Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian/Montenegrin, as well as fluent French.

Deputy Head of Mission, Albania

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
