Problem Description

It’s weird enough that Bunrodean shield relays can be outfitted with limiters to consume zero energy. But given sufficient limiters, their reactors can also be turned into coolers. A Dark Reactor with 15 limiters will produce -4,224 heat, meaning better cooling than a Liquid Helium Cooler. I’m not sure whether this is intended but it doesn’t seem too plausible. It particularly makes little sense with the description suggesting that limiters “increase the heat efficiency of a reactor” rather than provide active cooling.

Desired Solution

I guess that ideally the heat parameter of the reactor would be combined with any overclockers and limiters present and wouldn’t drop below zero. So installing more than five limiters on a Dark Reactor without overclockers wouldn’t improve the heat production any more.

Alternative Approaches

Given that the engine likely doesn’t currently allow implementing the solution above, the heat impact of the limiters could also be reduced, making certain that the total always stays above zero. This would make the limiters rather pointless when compared to conventional cooling however.

As far as I know this is intentional. It helps out a lot with high numbers of outfit expansions where regular cooling becomes completely ineffective.

Edit: A comment on the PR which seems to discuss this:

I can see how this can be useful for gameplay occasionally, and I am perfectly happy with “magic” as an explanation. But a reactor producing negative heat that can offset the heat from the engines despite heat dissipation being essentially non-existent makes even less sense. 😅

Main factor way I see it is game mechanics. The way it is now is very simple. The "addons" aren't really connected to their "parent" outfit at all, their attributes get added up "globally" like any other. Only a "counter" value ensures you don't install more than you're supposed to. In other words, a solar panel doesn't know which solar battery it's installed on, just like fighters don't know which carrier they should go on.

One could use an additional counter - e.g. the Dark side reactor gets "reactor limiter slots" 8, the limiter gets "reactor limiter slots" -2, and the overclocker gets "reactor limiter slots" 1 to prevent the observed voodoo, but IMHO that's not really worth it.
