When I was a kid, the only family members we had nearby were my mom’s parents who lived in Escondido. Some holidays, we would drive down to their house for dinner. For others, they would drive up to ours.

I’ve never given a single serious thought to shopping for a cemetery plot. It’s not that I’m in denial about my eventual demise. It’s just that I’m cheap. The price tag for land plus embalming plus casket plus headstone would take a big chunk out of my kids’ not-so-big inheritance.

This is a great way to make use of leftover odds and ends from your Thanksgiving Turkey. By utilizing the carcass and wings that have been roasted, it creates a richly flavored soup. Feel free to use any leftover chicken or turkey broth in place of some of the water. It will only add extra flavor.

For most states, November means a biannual ritual of changing the clocks: the magical, longstanding practice of confusing our internal sense of time as we gain (in November) or lose (in March) an hour of precious zzz’s. The idea of eliminating— or keeping—Daylight Saving Time, or DST, has been proposed repeatedly across the nation. So, why do we still have it?

Ifrequently tell people, “I wear a lot of hats.” Usually in response to a call or email I have been slow in responding to. It’s an excuse, but it’s also true, both figuratively and literally. I’m a husband, father, brother, HOA board member, president of two swim teams and a small business owner. Somehow, I also find time to care for an aging parent, tinker on my truck and attempt basic home repair. I don’t think I have more responsibilities than anyone else, it just feels that way sometimes.
