Evaluation of the Economic Impact of Coastal Erosion in Dakar Region
2023
Journal of Coastal Research
Climate change impacts coastal zones economically, with erosion causing socio-economic damage by narrowing beaches and disrupting livelihoods, settlements, and activities like fishing, tourism, and industry. This study evaluates the economic impacts of coastal erosion in Dakar for 2030 and 2040 using multilinear regression and tools like R, Excel, and ArcGIS. Losses are estimated at 38.5 billion FCFA in 2030 and 57.8 billion FCFA in 2040.

Topography, Slope and Geomorphology’s Influences on Shoreline Dynamics along Dakar’s Southern Coast,
2023
Coast journal MDPI
This study examines how topography, slope, and geomorphology affect shoreline dynamics along Dakar's southern coast, focusing on Mbao, Bargny, and Toubab Dialaw. Using MNDWI for coastline delineation, DSAS for dynamic rates, and DEM for topography and slope, it found significant correlations in Mbao (0.63) and Bargny (0.87), dominated by low-lying soils. Toubab Dialaw, with higher topography and sandstone, showed a weaker correlation (0.15).

Coastline Dynamics Analysis in Dakar Region, Senegal from 1990 to 2040
2022
American Journal of Climate Change (AJCC)
The study examines shoreline dynamics in Dakar from 1990 to 2020 and predicts changes until 2040, highlighting variations across its northern, western, and southern coasts due to differing geologic and hydrodynamic conditions. Using GIS tools and historical Landsat images, the study found average retreat rates of -0.44 m/year (north), 0.21 m/year (west), and -0.11 m/year (south). Projections for 2030 estimate retreat rates of -4.4, 2.1, and -1.1 m/year for the respective coasts.
