The assignment involves developing an application that will allow the users to
determine an optimum stock portfolio using a minimum portfolio variance model
based on the average annual returns and correlations of at least 5 stocks based on
stock data from at least the last 3 years.
You have the choice of giving the user a fixed selection of the stocks, allowing the
user to choose a stock based on their input of a ticker symbol, or allowing the user
to choose based on a list that your program provides. Once all the stocks are
chosen the program must download the stock price data from the chosen website
and analysis the data for the annual rate of returns and the needed correlations.
Please note for this assignment the annual returns of each stock can be calculated
as simply as using the opening price on Jan 1 and the closing price on Dec 31 of
each year.
Your Task
Develop an application that allows your user to input their stocks and returns a
portfolio optimization for the chosen stocks.
Your user is a moderately sophisticated investor but is not very sophisticated when
it comes to using computer applications. The user has requested that the
application show the number of each stock in the optimized portfolio based on the
stocks they have chosen. The investor is looking to hold a maximum of 750 stocks
in this portfolio. Assume your investor is starting with no stock holdings in this
portfolio. The investor also wants to know the cost of the portfolio including the
$29.99 cost that the website brokerage charges the investor per firm when stocks
are purchased. The investor is looking to make at least a 6% return on the portfolio
and is not a high-risk investor and as such they are looking to minimise the variance
of the portfolio.
