Full report comprises the following items written strictly in the following order : - Experiment title, Abstract, objectives, introduction/theoretical section including information on the use and benefits of heat pumps, theoretical analysis (including the equations controlling the operation of the heat pump) and illustration, experimental data (tabulated), sample of calculations, experimental results (tabulated), full discussion, concluding remarks and the heat pump cycle chart (showing the actual cycle of the pump in full load condition).
Objectives:
1. To determine the coefficient of performance of Hilton heat pump, under steady state condition, using various calculation methods.
2. To verify between the calculated coefficients of performance and explain the discrepancy.
4- To check the validity of the assumption of adiabatic heat pump, evaporator and condenser by performing simple heat balance.
Requirements:
1. Determine the coefficient of performance of the heat pump by various methods, as indicated in the calculation section of this document, and discuss the discrepancy.
2. Check the assumption of adiabatic evaporator and condenser and discuss the result in detail.
3. Determine the overall heat transfer to/from the heat pump and identify the sources of heat transfer to/from the plant.
4. Discuss the results and present a summary of the main conclusion points in a full laboratory report (Your conclusion should relate to the experiment objectives .
Apparatus:
The experiment is carried out on a Hilton heat pump rig (R560). The rig comprises an integrated compressor/motor unit, evaporator, condenser and a thermostatic throttling valve. The unit is provided with a digital electric meter to determine the power consumption of the motor- compressor unit (in Watts), pressure gauges, thermocouples with a selector switch, water flow meters, and a liquid refrigerant flow-meter. A schematic diagram of the experimental apparatus and general view of the rig are shown Figure 1 and Plate 1, respectively.
Theoretical overview:
The purpose of a heat pump is to supply a heat to a region by taking heat from a lower temperature region. This requires energy input, usually in the form of work as indicated in Fig. 2. Optimum performance is achieved as the amount of work required for a specified amount of heat delivered to the higher temperature region is minimised. Obviously, the same equipment can serve either as a heat pump or as a refrigerator. The difference is only in the purpose: the refrigerator’s purpose is to remove heat from a lower temperature region; the heat pump’s purpose is to provide heat to a higher temperature region. Because the purposes are different, different indexes of performance are called for (refer to the refrigerator and heat pump definitions in the lecture notes).
