Task Description: Develop a small software script or tool that allows a user without administrator privileges to check who has write access to a specific file on a shared file server within a Windows Server 2019 domain environment. Current Process: When a file on the shared server is open in "read-only" mode (indicating another user has it open with write access), I currently have to ask our IT administrator (who has full permissions) to identify the user with write access. The administrator uses Remote Desktop to connect to the server, then navigates to "Computer Management," selects "Shared Folders," and checks "Open Files." Based on the file path I provide, he can see which user currently has write access to the file. Objective: Create a solution that replicates this process but allows me to identify the user with write access independently, without needing administrator permissions. Requirements: Input: The tool should allow me to enter a file path to check its write access status. Output: It should return the username of the person who has write access (or a message if no one currently has it open with write permissions). Permissions: Since I don’t have admin privileges, the solution should work within these constraints. Efficiency: The solution should be lightweight and minimally impact server resources. Possible Approaches: I’m open to suggestions for how this could be implemented. Whether it’s a script, standalone application, or any other format, I’d like it to be user-friendly and straightforward. The solution should be developed using PowerShell.
