This section delves into her feelings of isolation, stemming from being profoundly different from those around her. As events unfold, she discovers a harrowing truth about her brother. His best friend, William, confesses that, years ago, they murdered two girls who had been bullying Camila. This revelation brings to light the nature of justice in a world without a governing authority or an impartial standard. The next major character introduced is Christopheles, the antagonist of the story. He is a revolutionary and the embodiment of the devil through a Jungian lens—a manifestation of the restless human spirit and pure will. Christopheles begins his rebellion by robbing a barracks and executing a priest, or magi, to demonstrate the fallibility of those deemed divine. He inspires the people with a vision of a new age, one free from the condemnation of morality and the constraints of standards—an era where they can want freely and define themselves on their terms. This section reflects themes from Saint Augustine's Confessions, where he laments the human spirit's desire to usurp God's place as the ultimate authority. Augustine notes how rebellion against institutions and authority offers a morbid satisfaction but ultimately leads to enslavement by one's vices. This is what the clergy understands and Christopheles does not. By claiming freedom from judgment, the human spirit inevitably becomes trapped by its own desires. Thus, Christopheles serves as the archetype of the devil in this story—a cautionary figure who embodies rebellion and the unbounded will. The next major character introduced is Izaline, a girl who shares an uncanny likeness to Camila and another pivotal character for a profound reason. They are crafted from the same genetic sequence through alchemy. Camila and Izaline are descendants of a goddess who fell from the cosmos in the form of a virus carried by a comet. This virus merged with life on Earth to regain its original form, igniting a war centuries ago between humans and creatures later called vampires. These vampires—or rather, aliens—are now extinct, as humanity drove them to annihilation. Izaline gains forbidden knowledge of the outside world from a mysterious entity later revealed to be the devil. She is eventually rescued by a member of the clergy named Edward.
