Job Description: Systems Administrator for On-Site Server and Laptop Configuration Project

Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Systems Administrator to assist in the configuration and deployment of an on-site server solution integrated with 10 Dell XPS 13 laptops. The objective is to set up a secure, reliable system to route all laptop activities through a server located in a specific geographic area while maintaining operational efficiency and compliance with geolocation requirements.

Responsibilities:

1. Server Setup and Configuration:

- Install and configure an Ubuntu Server (22.04) or Debian-based operating system.

- Set up VPN services (e.g., WireGuard or OpenVPN) with Maryland-based IPs.

- Configure load balancing using NGINX or HAProxy.

- Implement monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana) and logging tools (Fail2Ban, UFW).

2. Networking and Security:

- Set up a secure local network with a router supporting VPN functionality.

- Configure a 24-port Gigabit switch for device connectivity.

- Develop firewall rules and security protocols to prevent unauthorized access.

3. Laptop Configuration:

- Install and configure Linux OS (Ubuntu Desktop 22.04) on 10 Dell XPS 13 laptops.

- Set up secure remote access (e.g., SSH, VNC) for laptops to connect to the Maryland server.

- Test and optimize traffic routing to ensure all data passes through the server.

4. Testing and Troubleshooting:

- Simulate real-world activities (e.g., accessing news sites and other approved platforms) to verify system performance.

- Identify and resolve issues related to latency, connectivity, or geolocation detection.

5. Documentation and Handover:

- Create detailed documentation for system setup, configurations, and maintenance procedures.

- 2 HRS Training end users or designated personnel on system management and troubleshooting.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

- Strong experience with Linux systems administration (Ubuntu Server/Desktop, Debian).

- Proficiency in VPN setup and configuration (WireGuard, OpenVPN).

- Networking expertise, including router configuration, firewalls, and traffic routing.

- Familiarity with load balancing tools (NGINX, HAProxy) and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana).

- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for both hardware and software.

- Experience with remote management tools (Ansible, Puppet) is a plus.

- Excellent communication skills and ability to create clear technical documentation.

Project Details:

- Location: Preferably in Maryland, Washington DC, but remote work with occasional on-site tasks is acceptable. Being in Maryland or Washington DC is advantageous due to server setup requirements.

- Duration: 7 days maximum.

- Budget: Competitive and negotiable based on experience.

- Start Date: Immediate, with flexibility for the right candidate.

Future Maintenance Needs:

- While this project has a fixed duration, additional maintenance or updates to the server may be required periodically. If the selected candidate is interested, we can discuss an ongoing support agreement for future troubleshooting and system improvements. Also Additional Server Setup opportunity.
