Fix word press permalink problem

When I try to change my wordpress permalink setting from the default to post name I get a 404 page not found error. I have made sure the .httaccess file was correct but I am still having problems. I have had a couple freelancers look at it and they could not figure it out. It probably is not as simple as you think.
