Contest Brief
I’m looking for a fun graphical character to put on a small racing sailboat.
The name of the boat is Malolo - which means “flying fish” in Hawaiian/Polynesian, so I’d like a simple image of a flying fish character to give some added personality and “attitude” to my boat.
The boat is a “foiling” boat, which means that when it moves, it will rise above the water and ride on its hydrofoils - it flies above the water (will attach pictures) - like a flying fish. The boat is small - 10 feet in length.
The graphic needs to be simple so it can be easily recognized from a distance. It will be placed on my sail (which is a clear film) and it will probably also be placed in a small format near the front of the hull, near the name (see example photo of “Green Flash”). To do this, I will need to render the name and graphic on adhesive vinyl, which will then be placed on the boat and sail. Simple outlines, monochrome or two-color will likely work best.
The graphical character should evoke a sense of fun, but not be silly. Anatomically representative, but not precisely accurate. Here are a couple different possible creative themes:
1) Hawaiian - relating to the Hawaiian name Malolo
2) Possibly a flying fish from space? (The brand name of the boat is UFO - which is a play on a unidentified flying object / spaceship)
3) Something completely different from your own inspiration (surprise me!)
The overall idea is a little like the “nose art” that used to go on aircraft during World War II. I’ve attached some photos to give you a sense of the boats, where others have named theirs, and a couple of flying fish graphics. Don’t take the graphics as creative direction per se; i am just including these so you can see the creature I am referring to.
Let’s have some fun with this - I am open to new ideas, and look forward to seeing yours!
Thank you!
