In March we were going to hold a function to celebrate the International Day of Happiness. It is also the month of World Poetry Day. We are no longer holding the event (for the Junto Dinner Club) because there is so much else on in town that we can't get a chef - and we don't want to compete with other worthy functions on including a food event - Taste Great Southern, and a long table dinner at Ravens which is a fundraiser for the Denmark Bush Fire Brigade . I would like to have someone illustrate a series of stories about animals (from the Panchatantra) written in the form of a poetry. Each story will be about 750 words long and will need 7 to 8 illustrations showing animals such as crows, monkeys, lions etc. The target age group is 6 to 10 year old children. There and back again: Retired ship’s cook tells of a 42 day tanker voyage from San Francisco to Houston, via Panama at Christmas time, and returning to Los Angeles. The story is in logbook style, talks about the daily life of captain, cook and crew of a ship, with maritime terminology, weather and daily positions, with recipes and seaman’s poetry, all sprinkled in as needed. The point of view is that of the cook’s toy dog taken along for photo ops to capture the interest of first readers age 6-9. Most of this material is written (30-40 pages), but needs to be fleshed out and edited to appeal to the target audience.
