Project Objective
Quickly migrate the current shared email server to AWS to gain control, improve security, and ensure reliable email deliverability.
Scope of Work
Day 1: Environment Setup and DNS Configuration
Provision an EC2 instance with a stable Linux distribution (Ubuntu/CentOS).
Configure security groups to allow email traffic (ports 25, 587 for SMTP; 993 for IMAP, 995 for POP3).
Update DNS records for the domain:
Set up MX records for the new server.
Configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records for email authentication.
Day 2: Email Server Installation and Basic Configuration
Install email server software (Postfix for SMTP, Dovecot for IMAP/POP3).
Configure Postfix for basic email sending and receiving.
Create initial user accounts.
Obtain and install SSL/TLS certificates using Let's Encrypt for secure connections.
Day 3: Security Implementation and Basic Testing
Implement user authentication (SASL) in Postfix.
Configure SSL/TLS for secure email transmission.
Conduct basic testing for sending and receiving emails to ensure setup is functional.
Day 4: Advanced Configuration and Testing
Fine-tune email server settings for performance and security (rate limiting, anti-spam measures).
Perform comprehensive testing of email functionality:
Validate email deliverability (not marked as spam).
Ensure proper SPF, DKIM, and DMARC configurations.
Document the setup process and create a backup strategy for email data.
Day 5: Final Validation and Go-Live
Validate all configurations with test emails to multiple domains.
Monitor the server for initial hours post-migration to ensure stability.
Go live with the new email server and perform final checks.
Provide documentation and support for any immediate post-migration issues.
Deliverables
A fully functional email server on AWS.
Configured and updated DNS records for the new setup.
SSL/TLS certificates installed for secure email communication.
Initial documentation of server configuration and DNS changes.
Test results to confirm successful email sending/receiving and deliverability.
Success Criteria
Successful migration of email services to AWS within the 4-5 day timeframe.
