Argues that the romances collected by Robert Thornton employ the figure of the Saracen to allow for an early expression of national identity discourse. Arthurian romances in the Lincoln MS postulate England as a site where concord is possible, and Charlemagne romances in the London MS represent France as misgoverned. Saracens, as nebulous and ubiquitous medieval villains, expose simultaneously the (real or imagined) laudable elements of English culture and the weaknesses of French culture
