Maintenance Engineer

KTBC Fox 7, a Fox-owned and operated TV station in downtown Austin, TX, is seeking a full-time customer service-focused and team-oriented Maintenance Engineer.  The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for installing, operating, and maintaining video, audio, and other television broadcast and non-broadcast equipment, including data networks including SMPTE ST 2110 standards, production control switchers, audio mixers, automation systems, routing switchers, server-based record and play-out systems, non-linear editors, encoders, decoders and multiplexers, newsroom computer systems, media streaming systems, and RF transmission equipment.

Responsibilities include:

Provide paramount customer service and collaboration with other departments.

  • Collaborate with an astute engineering team to design, install, test, and document new systems and equipment as assigned.
  • Manage and maintain data networks while conforming to our Information Security Team's strict policies.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance to all systems supporting broadcast operations for live and production events.
  • Accurately troubleshoot and repair technical faults quickly to minimize loss of service.
  • Perform software and hardware updates, tests, and installation as required.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to the technical operating staff on day-to-day operations and workflows.
  • Practice, teach, and encourage best engineering standards and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Applicant must have the ability to solve complex problems and the capacity to concentrate for long periods.
  • Must have a solid working knowledge of broadcast and network systems. Experience in RF and fiber optic workflows is desirable.
  • Applicant must be able to work in a proactive, not a reactive, environment.
  • Candidate must be able to work in a team collaborative environment and be a self-starter without direct supervision.
  • Must be flexible with changes in workflows, a clear communicator, detail-oriented, and highly organized.
  • Applicants with prior experience in television, radio broadcast engineering, or similar technical disciplines are preferred.
  • An associate degree with an emphasis in Engineering/ IT is preferred, or at least four years of equivalent industry experience is needed.
  • Applicant must be able to climb ladders up to 20 feet, lift 40 pounds, and work in tight spaces.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.
  • Must be able to work fully onsite, either at the station's Studio or Transmitter.
  • A valid driver's license and a good driving record are required to drive company vehicles.
  • Must pass a background check.

News Producer

Content creators -- this kind of opportunity doesn’t pop up in local newsrooms very often. So, take note and get those resumes ready! 

KTBC FOX 7 in Austin is hiring a producer to create, plan and deliver the most compelling, informative, and entertaining hour of morning news in the city. This is an ultra-competitive news market, but Austin’s Morning Show is growing! We’re looking for a content rockstar who can move seamlessly from breaking news and severe weather coverage to live segments and studio guests that showcase everything our diverse community has to offer. 

You’ll need a sense of urgency and mastery of the control room environment and be ready to take live coverage on linear, streaming platforms or both at the same time. You’ll need to maintain a close relationship with our digital team to ensure that everything we do is tailored for the platforms we serve and that each piece of content we create works in support of our growing digital footprint. Other skills we’re looking for in the ideal candidate include concise, accurate and audience-focused writing skills, the ability to edit video in support of live and studio segments, plus knowledge of social media best practices.

When your show is over, you’ll jump into planning mode for the next day and beyond, working collaboratively with your teammates. You’ll participate in the editorial process along with anchors, reporters, assignment desk team members and managers to develop future stories and segments, keeping FOX 7 ahead of all local news outlets in creating the most compelling content for our audience.

Requirements:  Minimum 2 years’ experience as a producer in a small or medium market is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field preferred. Must be able to work under pressure, meet strict deadlines and multitask. Ideal candidate has familiarity with newsroom computer systems, graphics programs and video editing software. Candidate must be able to work flexible hours/shifts/shows. This is a morning news position, but other shifts may be assigned as needed, including nights, weekends and holidays. News Producer/Assignment Editor

KTBC FOX 7 in Austin, TX is hiring a News Producer/Assignment Editor to put together a fast-paced, clear newscast with good writing skills, graphics use, and ability to put the best video with the best writing. 

Work with reporters and photographers to get the best stories on the air. Will help post stories to our website, social media and update as needed. Also works on assignment desk, to manage crews, prepare and maintain futures and story files, participate in daily editorial meetings and make story coverage decisions.

Will help set up microwave and satellite feeds.  Coordinate with Engineering and Production for live coverage of daily news and special events. Additional skillset of working on assignment desk.

Working knowledge of libel laws and journalistic ethics. Social media skills. Knowledge of microwave/satellite news gathering. Knowledge of newsroom computer systems. College degree preferred in related communications field. Must be creative and highly motivated and organized.
