Until the arrival of the S21 this year, the Galaxy S20 was Samsung’s flagship phone, and there are five variants of the handset offering different levels of technology. There’s the original S20, S20 5G, S20+ 5G, S20 Ultra 5G and S20 FE.
The S20 5G is now effectively the base model, adding 5G connectivity to the original handset.

Galaxy S20 5G screen size and battery
The Galaxy S20 5G has a 6.2” AMOLED screen with a “Quad HD+” resolution (3200 x 1440), which is as close to 4K as it gets on a mobile screen. It also has a high refresh rate of 120Hz for the smoothest possible motion. The vibrant, high-res display is powered by a 4,000mAh battery that you can charge wirelessly.
It’s not the highest capacity battery on the mobiles market, but should get you through a full day between charges. Samsung says you’ll get 14 hours’ web browsing from it over 4G, or 15 hours over wifi.
Galaxy S20 5G camera set up
On its rear, the Galaxy S20 5G has twin 12 megapixel (MP) lenses and a 64MP main lens. With an f-number range of 1.8 to 2.2. At f1.8, you’ll get a strong bokeh (selective blurring) effect for professional-looking portraits. On the front there’s a 10MP, f2.2 lens for selfies.
The S20 5G captures video in up to 8K at 24 frames per second, which is a higher resolution than most televisions can handle. This means you can pull super-high resolution stills from your recordings, which is great for creating action shots.
The camera array is capable of 3x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom. Combined that gives you 30x zoom capability. There’s also a 100x ‘space zoom’ mode for astrophotography and extreme close ups.
Galaxy S20 5G memory and processor
The Galaxy S20 5G comes with 128GB of storage but can be expanded by up to an additional 1 terabyte via a micro SD slot.
There’s 12GB of RAM onboard the S20 5G, which is way more than the average laptop computer, along with an eight-core processor that tops out at 2.73GHz. This is certainly at the higher end of processing power for the mobiles market and means you’ll have no issues running demanding apps, or having several running in parallel.
Other features
The S20 5G has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. It means the phone would survive if submerged in water of up to 1.5m for up to 30 minutes.
Other notable features include space for two SIM cards (useful for switching between a personal and a work number without having to carry two handsets), NFC for contactless payments, and the latest version of Android.
Finally, the headline upgrade from the original Galaxy S20 is 5G connectivity. 5G is the newest and fastest type of mobile connection. It’s currently being rolled out across the UK, which means it may not be available in your area yet.
When it does reach you, however, you’ll have access to faster download speeds than you would get from your home broadband.
Ways to pay for the Samsung Galaxy S20 5G
A popular option is to buy a S20 via a bundled ‘pay monthly’ contract. This means the cost of the handset, plus a set amount of data, texts and minutes are all wrapped up in one package for a fixed monthly price.
Alternatively, you could buy a S20 with a 0% purchase credit card which allows you to spread the cost of your payments over a period of up to 20 months interest-free.
You should aim to clear your balance before the 0% deal ends, to avoid paying any interest at all.
Once you’ve bought your handset, you can then take advantage of a cheap SIM-only deal which will give you a monthly allowance of calls, texts and data for a fixed price.
GiffGaff, for example, offers 10GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts for £10 a month.
Protecting your Samsung Galaxy S20 5G
All Samsung smartphones come with a 24-month manufacturer’s warranty. Repairs can be done at the doorstep or picked up and taken to a workshop.
You can also buy extended coverage with Samsung Care+. This offers cover for all accidental damage for up to two years. It also covers hardware repairs, software, battery replacements. There is a service fee per claim.
Gadget insurers like Protect Your Bubble offer standalone policies that cover against broken screens, water damage, theft and more. They usually cover your device abroad too. Policies with CoverCloud, for example, start from £7.47 with excess (the amount you contribute towards the cost of a claim) starting at £75.
You should check your current account before buying any protection, as some banks offer free mobile phone insurance with their accounts – especially those that charge a fee. If yours does, it’s best to check the cover limit is sufficient to replace your phone, should it be damaged beyond repair or lost.
Similarly, your home insurance may provide the cover you need, but your policy will need accidental damage and personal possessions protection to cover you against mishaps at home and while you’re out.
