Why We Picked It

The iPhone 16 Pro is the oversized (now 6.3”), highest spec version of its newest handset, which means it has all of the latest and greatest hardware and features.

The handset features the new A18 Pro processor, a 48 megapixel wide-angle lens, a new touch-sensitive camera control button and Apple’s take on AI – Apple Intelligence. The handset features the new A18 Pro processor, a 48 megapixel wide-angle lens, a new touch-sensitive camera control button and Apple’s take on AI – Apple Intelligence. And, while the extra £100 might not be justifiable for everyone for a larger display, the larger handset does house a larger battery (4674mAh), resulting in up to 27 hours of video playback.

Pros & Cons
  • Affordable
  • New, powerful processor
  • 5X camera zoom
  • £100 extra for 0.6” larger display

Prices begin at £799 for the 128GB model, but that’s cheaper than what the iPhone 14 Plus launched at last year (£849).

Pros & Cons
  • Cheapest iPhone 15
  • A16 Bionic processor
  • Not the latest Apple processor
  • Inferior 60Hz display

Which iPhone model is right for you?

The answer to this question depends on whether or not you value the latest and greatest technology, what you use your phone for, how large a handset you’re willing to carry – and, of course, how much you are prepared to spend.

The most expensive Pro Max handsets, as they’re reiterated each year, are at the cutting edge of Apple’s technology advancements. If that’s important to you, you’ll have to make a judgement about whether or not their high price (above £1,000) can be justified.

While that might not be for everyone, the newer handsets also tend to have the best battery life and fastest processors, something that could be important to more general users.

Considerations when choosing an iPhone

Other than your budget, the biggest question might be whether or not you really need the latest and greatest model. Apple updates its handsets every September but these updates are iterative, meaning the changes are only slight year-on-year.

That is to say, you may be able to save serious money by choosing last year’s model, or even the year’s before, as you’re likely to find there’s no huge loss of features or quality.

Another major factor is the physical size of the handset. The largest iPhone, 6.9” iPhone 16 Pro Max, may be too unwieldy for smaller hands, for example.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the best iPhone?

With a large 6.9” screen and the latest technology on offer from Apple, the iPhone 16 Pro Max tops our list. The Pro version is not far behind and is worth considering if you don’t mind the smaller 6.3” display.

Which iPhone has the best camera?

You can take your pick between any of the iPhone 16 range for the best camera system, as they’re all the same.

All include the new 48MP wide rear lens – a vast improvement on the 12MP wide lens of previous generations.

Do iPhones come with 5G?

All of the iPhone 16 range comes with 5G. Apple began to include 5G connectivity in its devices from the iPhone 12 generation.

Which iPhone has the best battery?

While all the iPhones listed have a large battery capacity, how you use your phone will dictate how long it will remain powered. More demanding apps will zap power. However, phones with the latest processor, such as the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, will help use battery power efficiently.

What is eSIM?

eSIMs are designed to supersede traditional, physical SIM cards.

Instead of being a removable plastic card inside your phone, an eSIM is a small chip embedded in your handset. You can’t remove it and put it in another phone. Read more about eSIMs here.

Should I trade in my old iPhone?

Apple currently offers between £30 and £645 when you trade in an old iPhone. The newer the model, the more you’re likely to get. For example, you’ll get £45 for an iPhone 7 and £645 for an iPhone 15 Pro Max. The money is paid as credit towards new Apple products, not cash.

There are also many third-party phone recycling companies that will offer cash in exchange for iPhones. For example, Mazuma Mobile is offering £590 for an iPhone 15 Pro Max (256GB) in good condition, at the time of writing.

Trading in an iPhone can be a good way to fund the purchase of a new handset. It also supports a more environmentally friendly smartphone industry, as materials can be recycled and reused, lessening the need for mining raw materials.
