On Saturday, the Orlando Pride made NWSL history as they recorded their 17th undefeated match in the 2024 NWSL regular season. The Pride recorded a 2-1 victory against the Kansas City Current, who also entered the game undefeated in the regular season.

“To come to this environment, we knew that it was going to be a tough game,” said Pride Head Coach Seb Hines. “We had the same amount of points, same amount of wins, same amount of ties and there was nothing between us in this game. Then, I think we showed our class on the day, our character and personality. Everyone contributed to this win today and it is so good to head into this break with a valued three points.”

Orlando Breaks the Scoreline

Although the Pride previously set the highest winning streak in the NWSL with eight consecutive wins, their first matchup against the Current marked a key milestone in front of a sold out crowd at CPKC Stadium.

As each side held identical playing records, the Pride wasted no time as forward Barbra Banda opened up the scoreline to pave the way for the Pride as the visiting side. Banda’s goal marked her 12th goal and officially became the first player in NWSL history to reach 12 goals in under 16 appearances. With a goal scored in each of her appearances, Banda also leads the way in the NWSL Golden Boot race.

A few moments after the goal, international Temwa Chawinga matched Banda’s goal to equalize the score 1-1 in the 39’ minute. The Pride also took another hit as defender Carrie Lawrence was issued a second yellow card as she clipped Chawinga. Although the Pride were now down to 10 players, they persisted in a tough environment and were eventually issued a penalty kick in the 63’ minute.

At the top of the spot, Brazilian forward Marta placed a smooth ball to the left side of the net to regain the lead for the Pride. Although the Current pressed in their attack to try and repeat their comeback, Orlando ultimately pushed through pressure to secure a solid three points while on the road.

“I think it says so much about our mentality,” said midfielder Kerry Abello. “Going a player down obviously isn’t the best situation, but you can still get points. It is all about making good decisions and honestly being gritty in our defensive third. We were in our defensive third a lot that game, but we have a great defensive line. I honestly think our success on the field reflects so much what our culture is throughout the team. Again, I am just so happy for the team, and you can see that through all of us today.”

Following the 2-1 victory against the Current, the NWSL will now enter the Olympic break as players will report to international duty for the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, players who will remain in the USA, will participate in the first-ever NWSL x Liga MX MX Summer Cup, which will begin on Friday, July 19.
