All the front houses of Bryggen have been rented out as commercial shops catering to the tourists and the townspeople. But at the back are these wondrous well-preserved wood houses that jump out of your senses. They are an amalgam of tradition, function and drama.

The Glass House Mountains in Queensland, Australia.

A shot from 2014.

The iconic peak in the centre is Mount Coonowrin (377m), currently a restricted access area.

"The Glass House Mountains are a cluster of thirteen hills that rise abruptly from the coastal plain on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. The highest hill is Mount Beerwah at 556 metres above sea level, but the most identifiable of all the hills is Mount Tibrogargan which from certain angles bears a resemblance to a face staring east towards the ocean. The Glass House Mountains are located near Beerburrum State Forest and Steve Irwin Way. From Brisbane, the mountains can be reached by following the Bruce Highway north and taking the Glass House Mountains tourist drive turn-off onto Steve Irwin Way. The trip is about one hour from Brisbane. The Volcanic peaks of the Glass House Mountains rise dramatically from the surrounding Sunshine Coast landscape. They were formed by intrusive plugs, remnants of volcanic activity that occurred 26-27 million years ago. Molten rock filled small vents or intruded as bodies beneath the surface and solidified into land rocks. Millions of years of erosion have removed the surrounding exteriors of volcanic cores and softer sandstone rock.

Whilst the traditional names for the hills themselves are very old, the term 'Glasshouse Mountains' was given more recently by explorer Lieutenant James Cook on 17 May 1770. The peaks reminded him of the glass furnaces in his home county of Yorkshire. Matthew Flinders explored the area and climbed Mount Beerburrum after sailing along Pumicestone Passage in 1799."

Cube houses (Dutch: kubuswoningen) are a set of innovative houses built in Helmond and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level, since its main purpose is to optimise the space inside. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house corner upwards, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. The central idea of the cube houses around the world is mainly optimizing the space, as a house, to a better distribution of the rooms inside.

Harewood House near Leeds, Yorkshire is one of the Treasure Houses of England. It was used as a location for the ITV series Victoria and when we visited there was a small exhibition of costumes from the series. Lots to see, easily a full day out. (some interior photos)

When is an already beautiful building enhanced? When the wisteria is in flower, of course – although in this case, the climber all but overwhelms the property, like a colourful walrus moustache.

This is The Gate House, a 17th century Jacobean-style cottage on Ham Common near Richmond, west London. Built around 1675 and now a private residence, it was once a gate house to Ham House, the glorious National Trust property nearby.

I love this style of architecture which, to me, has clear Dutch influences. An altogether lovely house.
