New research projects in FISA http://www.fisaonline.de/ Here you will find the latest 20 projects that have been included in the Information System for Agriculture and Food Research (FISA). en-en Federal Office for Agriculture and Food TYPO3 Collaborative Project: Development of Sustainable and Competitive Insect Foods - Suproject G Insects are successfully marketed as feed in the domestic animal, livestock and aquaculture sectors, and insects also represent a suitable source of protein for human nutrition. Currently, however, insect foods are still a niche product and only a few products have been established on the market for many years. Cereal-based feed mixtures are often used as raw materials in insect fattening, which could also be used as livestock feed and food. The current still high prices for insect foods are also due to high raw material prices. Increasing consumer acceptance is necessary for the successful establishment of insect foods. The development of innovative and sustainably produced insect protein products can be a key to this. Project Objectives: - Development of insect foods on a sustainable feed basis with optimized protein composition for the food sector. - Improvement of the climate footprint of insect products and reduction of production costs through the use of regionally produced feed materials from agriculture that are not used as food and feed. - Adapting production processes to the requirements of the food industry in order to obtain high quality and safe insect food products.

Collaborative project: Mobile pig slaughtering – Mobile method for removing bristles - Subproject B During pigslaughtering, an important step in the process is the removal of the bristles. This is usually done with brewing machines, which require significant space, energy and water. Or the pigs are 'skinned' in a similar way to slaughtering cattle. However, this leads to a significant loss of fat and rind. In addition, the risk of infection of the carcass with pathogenic or spoilage-promoting germs when the rind is removed is very high, so that the meat must be further processed within a few hours under clean conditions. The primary goal of the project is to develop a space- and energy-saving device for removing bristles during fully mobile pig slaughtering. The project contributes to improvements and optimization of the processes and thus their practical feasibility on the farm. Mobile pig slaughtering has so far hardly been implemented in Germany for the reasons of bristling mentioned above. A technology concept already exists. First, a proof of concept should be provided. An independent prototype is then built. The new technology is then further tested and refined in the laboratory. At the end of the project, the finished prototype will be tested on strong hairy pigs of the 'Husumer Landschwein' breed in a relevant operational environment. The aim of the project is to be able to provide a functional demonstrator for mobile pig slaughtering, as well as for small slaughterhouses. In the scientific support of the project, data on consumption, energy requirements, space, time expenditure and practicability of previous processes are to be compared with the planned process. Microbiological parameters should also be compared and summarized as part of a bachelor's thesis.

Collaborative project: Establishment of the semi-mobile slaughter of domestic horses as a contribution to animal welfare in their final phase of life as well as to the ethical upgrading and use of valuable food resources - Subproject D The aim of the 'PfeMo' project is to promote and raise acceptance of the slaughter of horses by introducing and disseminating the possibility of semi-mobile slaughter of domestic horses. Semi-mobile slaughter makes it possible to dispense with the need to transport live animals. It would also be possible to have an emergency killing or even emergency slaughter carried out by a competent person using the mobile unit in acute cases (e.g. in the event of an accident), who may be on site faster than the veterinarian and thus shorten pain and suffering. The aim is to increase the acceptance of the horse as a food animal and the circle of competent persons through the development of training opportunities and intensive knowledge transfer. On the other hand, the food 'horse meat' is to be ethically upgraded and added value as a good quality meat with an origin from good animal husbandry through transparency and maximum animal welfare, and as a result is to be increasingly used again as a valuable food resource in human nutrition.

Collaborative project: Combining innovative technologies and decision support tools to reduce weed seed input into the soil and increasing the efficiency of subsoiling to reduce weed density and optimise resistance management – Subproject C The aim is to establish alternative weed control measures with a focus on reducing soil weed seed potential. Using the example of the two weed species of importance in many crop species, blackgrass and ryegrass. The development of a forecasting tool ('SIMDORMA') for the optimal timing of stubble cultivation, taking dormancy into account, can significantly increase the effect of partial fallow management and thus reduce weed pressure in the following crop and the further crop rotation in a simple, mechanical and resource-saving way. With the same objective, the use of existing but little used techniques to reduce seed entry before and during harvest is highlighted by investigating the Top Cut Collect and Seed terminator devices as an additional method in weed management. The Top Cut Collect device cuts fruiting stems of weeds before they mature above the crop stand, collects the cuttings, and removes them from the field. The Seed terminator device destroys weed seeds carried along in the combine and destroys them before the seeds reach the field soil when leaving the harvester. Increasing the effectiveness of these methods as well as identifying situations where the techlogies can be applied in agricultural practice can contribute to reducing the use of plant protection products and improving resistance management as well as increasing the competitiveness of these devices. Thus, in the sense of integrated pest management, weed density in subsequent crops can be reduced with new building blocks (= methods) or the efficiency of these measures can be increased.

Collaborative project: Combining innovative technologies and decision support tools to reduce weed seed input into the soil and increasing the efficiency of subsoiling to reduce weed density and optimise resistance management - Subproject B The aim is to establish alternative weed control measures with a focus on reducing soil weed seed potential.
