When it comes to moving criminal assets across national borders, ‘underground banking’ is on the rise. fedpol organised an initial round table on 30 October 2024 to exchange knowledge and experiences with national and international law enforcement agencies and financial intelligence units.
Criminals and terrorist organisations are increasingly using cryptocurrencies alongside traditional currencies to conceal their money flows. This poses new challenges for both law enforcement authorities and financial intermediaries. In addition to repressive measures, prevention work plays an equally important role in the fight against crime – which is why the Money Laundering Reporting Office Switzerland MROS invited to the second Crypto Symposium in Zug.
The use of data on airline passengers (passenger name records PNRs), has already proven effective in other countries for fighting terrorism and other forms of serious crime. If Switzerland is to be able to use this efficient instrument, it needs to enact the required legislation. On 15 May 2024, the Federal Council adopted the dispatch on the Passenger Name Records Act and forwarded it to Parliament.
Fraudulent emails posing as the police are currently circulating. The senders impersonate various police authorities as well as individuals. Calls in the name of fake authorities (police, customs) are occurring with increasing frequency.
