Vulnerable households and children’s homes will have access to free internet filters after Epic and the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society today signed a milestone agreement to protect youngsters from online abuse.

The Memorandum of Understanding, signed by Epic’s chief marketing officer Karl Galea and Foundation chair Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, outlines a comprehensive framework to address child online safety issues in Malta.

The agreement establishes a commitment between the two sides to implement robust training and development initiatives aimed at equipping Epic’s staff with essential knowledge and skills in child online protection. It also explores support measures for community training, including the potential provision of office space for such activities.  It also mandates collaborative efforts to engage in extensive public awareness campaigns on child internet safety and provides free internet filtering to vulnerable households and children’s homes, with the Foundation identifying those in need.

Ms Coleiro Preca said: “The Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society strives to create a safer digital environment for our children. This agreement underscores our unwavering commitment to child online protection and the immense responsibility we bear in equipping our communities with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of the digital world safely.”

This agreement following on the shocking figures from last year’s report on the online abuse children faced on a regular basis. The survey, commissioned by the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society as part of its Promote Online Protection Project — P.O.P-Up — was conducted by Misco International between May and June 2023 among 387 children in Years 3 to 11 across Malta’s schools. This survey, the first of its kind, revealed that almost a third of all students aged seven to 15 years received rude or inappropriate messages over their devices, while 15 per cent of children experienced some form of online abuse.

Ms Coleiro Preca said the digital world was growing at a rapid pace and it was exemplary of Epic to join its campaign to prevent the worrying situations youngsters were facing.  She called on all Internet service providers to also share this responsibility and play a crucial role in ensuring online safety for all users.

Epic CEO Pierre Etienne Cizeron said: ”As Malta’s leading mobile network, we are committed to educating our customers, especially parents and their kids, about online safety. This commitment is even more relevant as more customers on our network switch their home internet to Epic. We can provide expert advice and guidance to empower parents to make the internet a better place for kids, ensuring a safer online environment for children and enhancing community well-being.”

This partnership between Epic Malta and The Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society represents a proactive and unified approach to safeguarding children in the digital age.

Epic paves the way for unmatched connectivity at large-scale events in Malta https://www.epic.com.mt/news/epic-paves-the-way-for-unmatched-connectivity-at-large-scale-events-in-malta/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 11:51:03 +0000 https://www.epic.com.mt/?p=350190

As Malta heads into another packed event season, Epic continues to lead the charge in revolutionising connectivity for large-scale gatherings, this time setting a new standard with its latest 5G solution. Having seen another opportunity to provide seamless connectivity, Epic recently completed the installation of high capacity 5G infrastructure to enhance coverage and capacity in Ta’ Qali picnic area and the recently inaugurated concert area.

The addition of this new concert venue, which already hosts the National Stadium and MFCC, will make Ta’ Qali even more of a hub for events in Malta, such as the recent Ed Sheeran concert which saw 35,000 attendees – a huge gathering by Maltese standards.

This permanent infrastructure is already proving to be a robust solution, doubling the capacity for downloads and connectivity, when compared to the network infrastructure used in similar events in previous years. With speeds reaching up to 1.5Gbps, Epic’s 5G infrastructure now provides seamless and fast internet connectivity, ensuring that even in the most densely packed venues, attendees can instantly share photos and videos.

This was confirmed during the Ed Sheeran concert, where Epic customers used a record-breaking 1.9Tb (terabytes) of data during the show. That’s roughly a 75 per cent increase compared to the previous highest traffic demand at a similar event. The surge in data usage highlights both the growing demand for data and the exceptional performance and capacity of Epic’s 5G network, which proved itself up to the task.

Mario Cordina, radio networks senior manager at Epic, said: “As Malta continues to grow and host bigger and more complex events, its communications infrastructure must evolve. We are laying the groundwork for a modern and future-ready Malta, ensuring that when our customers attend large events, they have the best possible mobile connectivity experience,” he explains.

Antoine Galea, Epic’s Chief IT & Technology Officer added: “This is another building block in ensuring Epic delivers to its customers an award-winning network, and underscores Epic’s commitment to providing robust and reliable connectivity, playing a crucial role in the island’s progress. It also demonstrations Epic’s proactive approach to connectivity which allows its customers to enjoy exceptional experiences.”

In today’s digital age, the ability to connect and share experiences at events is as important as the event itself. Whether it’s a conference, trade show, or concert, seamless and fast internet connectivity is crucial. Epic recognises this need and has risen to the challenge, ensuring that Malta’s infrastructure keeps pace with the growing demands of its events.

5G technology is revolutionising how media is consumed and shared. It drives the consumption of immersive and enhanced video formats, enabling fans to share their experiences without delays. With Epic’s 5G solution in place, event attendees can expect flawless connectivity, making every moment shareable in real-time.

Navigating the Data Deluge. Keeping pace with the changing way Malta connects. https://www.epic.com.mt/news/navigating-the-data-deluge-keeping-pace-with-the-changing-way-malta-connects/ Mon, 20 May 2024 13:38:14 +0000 https://www.epic.com.mt/?p=349369

Over the past four years, we’ve witnessed a surge in mobile data usage, with the numbers telling a compelling story. From 4.8 million gigabytes (GB) in 2019 to a staggering 46.9 million GB in 2023, Epic’s mobile data usage has undergone a tenfold increase. This surge not only points to our growing reliance on mobile connectivity but also highlights the evolving role of smartphones—from mere communication tools to pivotal hubs of entertainment, work, and daily management.

This evolution is driven by our ability to collect, process – and swiftly transfer large volumes of data over the web. The seismic shift towards digitalization has been mirrored across various facets of our society, altering how we socialize, shop, and entertain ourselves. Each year, our online experience becomes faster, more immersive, and even more convenient.

Looking at the trends in retrospect it’s no wonder that in just one month today, our users consume an amount of data roughly equivalent to that consumed during all of 2019. Many have been speaking about the changing role of the phone and how we use it, but few were tasked with building the critical infrastructure capable of supporting these evolving demands, even before they happened.

At the beginning of Epic’s journey in Malta, the team committed €40 million investment to rebuild our network infrastructure – the strongest network we have ever built. Undertaking such an ambitious rebuild was no small feat for Epic. Securing the necessary funding and overcoming numerous challenges along the way tested our resolve and commitment to excellence.

The successful completion of this project stands as a testament to Epic’s dedication to maintaining the high standard of service our customers expect. This achievement exemplifies the power of efficient organization and a culture of perseverance. Through smart planning and a relentless drive towards efficiency, we’re demonstrating that even the most ambitious goals are within reach, setting a new benchmark for what we can accomplish in the future.

These efforts have already started bearing fruit, and were recently solidified by Ookla SpeedTest Awards, the global leader in internet testing and analysis, which confirmed Epic’s mobile network as Malta’s fastest. The upgrade also benefits customers in a tangible way as it enables Epic to offer the fastest fibre internet service, significantly outperforming cable internet. The shift to fibre is a leap towards unmatched speed, reliability, and bandwidth, facilitating faster and longer-distance signal transmission.

Strategic investments fuel digital transformation

However, the exponential rate of technological advancement, highlights the rapidly evolving nature of the industry and the fact that one can never rest on their laurels. The 2023 EY Attractiveness Report for Malta underscored the importance of a fast and reliable connection to Malta’s economy. While it is encouraging to see that most respondents (62%) reflected satisfaction with telecommunications services in the country, this reality underscores the necessity for continuous upgrades and improvements in our infrastructure.

Such progress isn’t solely the responsibility of telecom providers. The government plays a pivotal role in fostering a competitive environment that encourages investment from telecom companies. Upgrading a network’s infrastructure requires investment beyond the technology infrastructure itself. Given the importance of the Digital Economy for an island-state like Malta, three pillars need to be seen to, for Malta to keep up with the exponential pace of change.

Primarily, the authorities need to ensure a regulatory framework which is clear, unambiguous and streamlined, enabling players to have a one-stop-shop when planning for the future. Future readiness also requires a second pillar, that of having sound policy which encourages innovation, competition, and investment while safeguarding consumer interests. Third, and surely not least, the country needs to operate a constructive consultation process where players are part of the discussion earlier on and not roped in at a later stage, when it’s most often, too late to shape the right future together.

These three pillars are crucial in the telecom sector, driving operators to innovate continuously and remain at the forefront of technological advances. This dynamic not only benefits the providers but also stimulates the entire economy, ensuring that Malta remains a competitive player on the global stage.

Connectivity as a Business Imperative

As we forge ahead, bolstered by our recent successes, it’s crucial to acknowledge the broader implications of our technological advancements. Not keeping pace with the speed of change impacts our society daily, as is the case with the challenges Malta faces around its traffic and its power infrastructure.

Successful business clients on our network are making change happen every day. There are countless stories of businesses that we have seen grow on the Epic network. Some of these businesses start off with what many would think is a crazy idea at the start, yet a several years later, few would need convincing of their exponential growth story.

These businesses depend on cloud computing, real-time data analytics, online collaboration tools, and bandwidth-intensive services like video conferencing, VoIP, and remote desktop services. A modern business demands networks that can support numerous connected devices without compromising speed or security. These types of business are in fact the main contributors to Malta’s economy as evidenced by the annual GDP trends.

Epic meets these businesses’ demands by enhancing our infrastructure to support high-bandwidth applications and services, ensuring that businesses in Malta can utilize the latest digital tools and technologies to remain competitive globally.

Embracing the Future

The exponential increase in video content consumption, particularly through platforms like TikTok and Instagram, now dominates the digital landscape, significantly contributing to the overall data usage. This trend is only set to accelerate as advancements in graphics and viewing devices enhance the video consumption experience.

Undoubtedly artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to usher in a new era of data consumption. AI’s capacity to personalize content, automate processes, and enable smarter, more efficient operations means that our reliance on data will continue to grow exponentially.

Epic is keenly aware of these evolving trends and is committed to enhancing our network’s capacity to support the future of digital innovation, ensuring our users remain at the forefront of the digital age. Ultimately, our goal is to create a digital future that is defined by speed, reliability, and seamless connectivity. By prioritizing investments in infrastructure, innovation, and global connectivity, we can ensure that everyone can thrive in a future of seamless connectivity that offers everyone the possibility of thriving in a fast-paced digital economy.

The power of authenticity https://www.epic.com.mt/news/the-power-of-authenticity/ Wed, 08 May 2024 13:21:34 +0000 https://www.epic.com.mt/?p=349281

Debbie Cauchi, with a demeanour that blends professionalism with a palpable warmth, shared her journey and philosophy. Starting in telecoms at 16, her career has been a mosaic of experiences, from customer-facing roles to strategic HR leadership, offering her a comprehensive view of the industry’s ins and outs.

“My first three jobs were in telecoms, including my first job at a call centre. I’ve seen this industry from almost every angle giving me first hand understanding of the challenges and dynamics at every level,” she reflects.

Cauchi joined Epic in 2021 shortly after it took over from its predecessor. The transition was not just a shift in structure but a shift in culture, requiring a leadership team which could navigate these waters with authenticity. “It was a period of rapid change, and how well people adapted depended significantly on their readiness for transformation. Being authentic in our communications about these changes made all the difference.”

Challenges aside, the transition also presented its fair share of opportunities, allowing her to develop and apply the people-centric ethos the company thrives on today. “It was a challenging time, but it laid the groundwork for what Epic has become today,” she notes, outlining a shift towards a culture that prizes unity, authenticity, passion and above all a never- say-die attitude.

Embodying the Epic Challenger Spirit

Authenticity is at the heart of Epic’s operational philosophy, which Cauchi terms the “Epic Challenger Spirit.” This ethos is about more than just challenging the status quo; it’s about genuinely caring that things are done right, empowering employees, and never taking ‘no’ for an answer. “We’re not about layers and bureaucracy,” explains Cauchi. “Here, everyone is encouraged to contribute. If you have a compelling idea, you’re empowered to bring it to life. This is how we challenge the old ways and push boundaries – together as one team.”

The spirit of collective endeavour and empowerment is also evident in the company’s approach to diversity and inclusion. Epic doesn’t focus on rigid programs, opting for a more organic embrace of different perspectives within its 330-strong workforce. “We don’t need formal programs to tell us to value diversity. It’s just who we are,” Cauchi states, her pride in Epic’s workforce diversity evident.

Bringing your best ideas to life, also means that when it comes to growth within the company, this is very dependent on the individual. “If you’ve got the drive and the willingness to work, you’ll definitely find opportunities to grow. I consider myself to be a testament of this because I did not join in my current role.”

A culture where every voice matters

Cauchi’s leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in empathy and a genuine desire to connect with her team on a personal level. She values the unique stories each member brings to Epic, believing that acknowledging everyone—not just the employee – fosters a more unified and supportive workplace.

This people-first approach is crucial as she addresses the varied needs and aspirations within Epic’s multigenerational workforce, tailoring policies and practices to be more inclusive and accommodating.

“Each generation brings its unique perspective on what work means and how it should fit into life,” she explains. “For younger employees, there’s a stronger emphasis on setting boundaries, which isn’t about disengagement but about maintaining well-being.” This insight drives Epic’s approach to team building and engagement, ensuring that initiatives resonate with and include all employees, respecting their individual preferences and definitions of work-life integration.

One of her principal strategies involves regular check-ins by the HR team with team members, . “If I had more hours in the day, I would specifically allocate them to this task. We already place great importance on these interactions, but enhancing this area would further ensure that everyone feels seen and heard,” she explains. “It’s remarkable how much our team members value having someone genuinely inquire about their well-being. It creates a safe space where they feel acknowledged and supported.”

This commitment to regular interaction is not just about oversight but about building trust, a sense of belonging and ensuring that every employee feels valued and heard. The core of Cauchi’s vision for Epic is unequivocally clear – a workplace where every individual feels empowered to contribute, and every voice matters in shaping the company’s journey. She genuinely embodies the collective spirit that defines Epic, where the convergence of diverse talents and perspectives is not just welcomed but celebrated.

“Our strength lies in our collective spirit, in recognising and harnessing the diverse talents and perspectives each person brings,” she concludes, encapsulating her role as not just a leader but as a facilitator of a culture where empathy, understanding, and engagement drive innovation and success.

After being confirmed Malta’s fastest network by Ookla Speedtest Awards, a recent report by the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) has shown Epic to be the service provider leading the way in customer satisfaction and user experience.

The report, titled ‘End-user Affairs: Half Yearly Report July – December 2023’, found that Epic’s services were the subject of just nine per cent of all complaints in the electronic communications sector during the second half of 2023.

The report’s detailed findings further reinforce Epic Malta’s position as a leader in the telecommunications industry.

Commitment to quality and responsiveness

The report also highlights Epic’s industry-leading customer service. During a mystery shopping exercise involving over 900 calls to the customer care lines of Malta’s main service providers, Epic stood out with a 98% response rate within five minutes and a remarkable 90 per cent within just two minutes.

“Epic Malta’s outstanding performance in the MCA’s report reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering top-notch services and support to our customers,” Alessandra Verri, Epic’s Chief Customer Officer, said.

“We are thrilled to set the benchmark for quality and reliability in Malta’s telecommunications sector and will continue to innovate and improve to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.”

Trusted provider for home internet, TV and mobile

Since its introduction in Malta, Epic has established itself as the premier choice for a growing number of residents for all their connectivity needs, reflecting their trust and satisfaction in our services, the company added.

This trust is underscored by the MCA’s recent market analysis, which confirms that Epic is Malta’s foremost mobile network operator.

The analysis also casts a spotlight on the ascending popularity of Epic’s home internet, TV services and the cutting-edge Epic Fibre.
