We will take you now on a journey to explore the 10 must-see gems of this island, including its stunning landscapes, unique culture, and mouth-watering cuisine. So pack your bags and get ready to experience the magic of Madeira! Are you in?

1. The natural pools

Even though Madeira isn’t huge with its 714 km2, there are incredibly lot of amazing things to do. One of our favourites are definitely the natural pools. And the best thing is that since it’s nice, warm weather all year round, you can always take advantage of them. Since the water comes from the Atlantic Ocean it will be a bit colder during winter times but hey, the experience will be amazing either way, don’t you think?

So dare to take a dip in the fresh water and let us introduce you to our favourite spots for a natural bathing experience: The biggest pools are the natural pools of Porto Moniz. The swimming area is 3800 m2 big and the sun lounging area is 3210 m2. It offers everything you could need on a long, sunny day since it has a kids’ pool and playground, a bar, parking possibilities, and is also accessible for people with disabilities.

The natural Pool of Doca do Cavacas is a much smaller place, but it stands out because of its beautiful view. Located between Lido and Formosa Beach you will have a view over the highest cape in Europe (Cabo Girão) and also over Formosa Beach. It is breathtaking every time, especially during a colourful sundown.

2. Porto Santo beach & water sports activities

Watersports Madeira

One of the things to do in Madeira that you shouldn’t miss is water sports at Porto Santo Beach! The beach, which is 11km long, is known for its crystal-clear waters and fine golden sand. Porto Santo Beach is perfect for you when you want to experience a relaxing vacation at the beach but need some adventure once in a while as well.

Water sports are an integral part of the Porto Santo Beach experience. You can participate in a wide range of activities, from windsurfing and parasailing to jet skiing and paddle-boarding. Windsurfing is a popular water sport at Porto Santo Beach. With the help of strong winds and waves, it is a thrilling experience for everyone who needs some action. The beach has several schools that offer windsurfing courses for beginners and advanced surfers as well.

If you are also fascinated by the mysterious underwater world, you should go for some diving, which allows you to explore the depths of the ocean and observe the fascinating creatures that inhabit it.

Whales and dolphins are among the most popular marine animals to watch during a diving trip in Madeira. These intelligent and playful creatures are known to swim close to divers, providing a unique and unforgettable experience.

3. Laurissilva forest

If you’re looking for things to do in Madeira in nature, visiting the Laurissilva forest is a must. It is a remarkable and unique ecosystem that has attracted visitors and scientists for centuries. This forest, which covers almost 20% of the island, is a relic of a bygone era when the climate of Madeira was much wetter and cooler than it is today. Now it is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its beauty and ecological importance continue to inspire awe and admiration for everyone who visits it – it’s truly one of the best adventure activities in Madeira.

As a visitor to the Laurissilva forest, you can explore its many trails and paths, which wind through its dense foliage and lead to stunning viewpoints and waterfalls. Along the way, you may encounter some of the forest’s inhabitants, including rare birds such as the Madeiran firecrest and the laurel pigeon, as well as reptiles and amphibians that are found nowhere else on Earth. Amazing, isn’t it?

4. Fajã dos Padres

Fajã dos Padres

Fajã dos Padres translates to “the priests’ farmstead,” is a breathtakingly beautiful spot with a rich history and a unique blend of natural beauty and man-made marvels. Back in the days, sugar cane and other crops were cultivated here.

Today, Fajã dos Padres is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its stunning natural beauty. The only way to reach the fajã is by cable car, which descends 300 meters from the cliff top down to the valley floor. For this ride alone it is worth a visit!

Once you reach the fajã, you’ll be greeted by a lush oasis of greenery, dotted with palm trees and fruit orchards. There are mango and banana plantations through which you can have a walk.

Another highlight of Fajã dos Padres is the restaurant that serves delicious traditional Madeiran cuisine. The restaurant is located in a former sugar cane mill, and its terrace offers stunning views of the fajã and the small pebble beach. Be sure to try the local specialty, espada com banana (swordfish with banana), which is a surprisingly delicious combination!

5. Pico do Areeiro

One of the most popular hikes on Madeira is the trek to Pico do Areeiro, the third-highest peak on the island, standing at an elevation of 1,818 meters (5,965 feet) above sea level. The hike is not for the faint-hearted, but the effort is worth it for the stunning panoramic views of the island that await at the summit. Also there are some rest areas along the way for hikers to catch their breath and take in the stunning scenery.

Once you reach the summit, the views are nothing short of breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, as well as the capital city of Funchal and the rugged coastline of Madeira.

6. Viewpoints

Viewpoints

You are looking for more things to do on Madeira and can’t get enough of stunning views? We got you! From high cliffs to picturesque terraces, from city to beach views, there are plenty of places on the island where you can soak up the island’s beauty. Let us introduce you to our three favourite viewpoints in Madeira:

Cabo Girão is located on the southern coast of Madeira, it is one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs, standing at a height of 580 meters. You can walk along the glass-floored skywalk, which extends over the cliff edge, providing incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Balcões viewpoint is one of the most popular and stunning viewpoints on the island. It is located in the Ribeiro Frio area of Madeira’s Santana municipality, about a 45-minute drive from the island’s capital city of Funchal. To reach the viewpoint, you have to take a short hike through a small forest. The trail is well-marked and not too difficult, making it accessible to also inexperienced hikers.

Ponta de São Lourenço is a stunning peninsula on the eastern tip of Madeira, a natural reserve that offers dramatic views of volcanic cliffs, turquoise waters, and wild flora. You can take a hike along the rocky coastline and stop at various viewpoints along the way. A breathtaking experience!

7. Monte Palace Madeira Tropical Garden

Monte Palace Madeira Tropical Garden

The Monte Palace Madeira Tropical Garden is a 70,000-square-meter botanical garden that was opened to the public in 1991. The garden was built around the ruins of a historic hotel that dates back to the 19th century and was designed to showcase a vast collection of tropical plants and trees from all over the world.

Summer is just around the corner and while you might usually be planning your Summer holidays abroad by now, why not plan some mini summer holidays a bit closer to home? Now’s as good a time as any to explore what your local area has to offer.

So, If you’ve ever wondered “are there any good places to visit near me?”, here’s a list of our favourite places to escape to from some of Europe’s biggest cities!

Escape Dublin for the day

Dublin is gorgeous in the summer, but with so many great places just a short drive away, you would be amiss to not try some of them!

Wicklow Mountains

Wicklow Mountains

An hour outside the city lies the ‘Garden of Ireland’. The Wicklow Mountains are 20,000 hectares of mountain scenery perfect for barbecues, fishing and hiking. With ample space to park your car, it’s the ideal city escape for the summer!

Malahide

Malahide Castle, Ireland

An inviting coastal town just on the outskirts of Dublin, a day trip to Malahide is just what you need on a sunny summer’s day. Traditional shop fronts, colourful hanging flower baskets and an enchanting view of Dublin Bay are all on the menu of the day. Don’t miss out on the pride of the town, Malahide Castle; one of Ireland’s oldest castles.

London day trips

Londoners, you may be eager to get out of the city and enjoy your summer holidays, but have you considered these destinations, just a stone’s throw away?

Seven Sisters Cliffs

Seven Sisters Cliffs

Arguably the most beautiful stretch of nature nearest to London, just an hour’s train ride away from the capital. Take the train to Brighton, stop off for a Full English by the seaside, and then get a 10-minute bus to Seaford (buses 12, 12a or 12x will take you all the way). Start your walk along the cliffs from there!

Deal, Kent

Flowers in Deal, Kent

If you’re longing for a day at the seaside, head to the charming village of Deal in Kent. It’s the smaller, less crowded sister of the more popular Margate. Take the train from London St. Pancras and you’ll be in Deal in just over an hour and a half! Stroll up to Deal castle, or spend the day lounging on the beach. Burn off your lunch of fish & chips with a meander around the colourful seaside cottages.

Barcelona summer day trips

Yes, Barcelona has its own beach, but it’s not quite the beachy paradise that comes to mind when we think of summer holidays. Here are the best city escapes to enjoy a long summer’s day, close to Barcelona:

Costa Brava

Just a short (1h 30min) drive away from the city, the Costa Brava is a stretch of rugged coastline with some of the most beautiful beaches in the area. Sure, you can spend the day on the beach, or if you’re in the market for a bit of adventure you can walk part of the Cami de Ronda. To complete the entire walking trail can take up to 15 days, but you can do the best bit (between Sant Feliu de Guixols and Palamós) in just a day. Alternatively, head a further bit up to the colourful town of Begur, one of the most picturesque spots on the coast.  Bag a table on one of the terraces overlooking the sea and enjoy a lunch of freshly caught seafood while you soak in the sun!

The Pic Carlit

Hiking in the Pyrenees

If you live in Barcelona, and this isn’t on your bucket list… It should be! Hiking the Pic Carlit mountain in the Pyrenees is a rite of passage for all Catalonians. Then comes the next question: which side will you hike it from, the ‘hard’ side, or the ‘family’ side? For non-experienced hikers, start off from Lac des Bouillouses, for an easier route up the mountain (we say easier, but it’s still quite a feat!). Make sure you take a sandwich and lots of water with you, there’s nowhere to buy anything once you reach the top.

Things to do near Budapest

Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton

Hungary is a landlocked country, but it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some seaside fun if you live in Budapest. Ok, so Lake Balaton is quite obviously a lake and not the sea, but it hasn’t earnt its name ‘The Hungarian Sea’ for nothing. With 236 kilometres of coastline, there’s something for everyone. There are waterfront clubs, nightlife and spa resorts, as well as more secluded spots of protected woodland, wildlife and vineyards. Take a direct train from the city, or rent a car and do the hour and a half drive.

Szentendre

Szentendre

For a day trip closer to home, Szentendre is just a 30 min drive from the city. A charming riverside town with cobblestone streets, it’s a wonderful place to get lost in for the day.

Day trips from Paris

Loire Valley

Castle in the Loire Valley

Just an hour and fifteen-minute train ride away from Paris is the Loire Valley, famed for its breathtaking countryside and palatial castles, not to mention the unrivalled gastronomy and outstanding wines produced in the region. Take your bike and enjoy the day cycling around the vineyards, then stop off for a picnic in the shade of an old castle. Summer days don’t get any better than this!

Etretat

Etretat coast line

For the determined beachgoers, you can just about squeeze this trip into a day but it’ll be a long one! The car journey from Paris to Etretat takes about two and a half hours, so make sure you pack plenty of car snacks. You’ll be glad you put in the car hours once you arrive. Long stretches of beach with a unique coastline await you. Spot the extraordinary arches in the chalk cliffs that magically light up during the nighttime.

You don’t have to travel far to have a wonderful summer. Start planning your local summer weekends now!

Maclehose Trail hong kongWith outstanding ridges, peaks, beaches, bush and views, the Maclehose Trail will give everything you want but only if you dedicated yourself to the trail first. It isn’t easy doing this and you’d have to be mad on hiking to get it done, but it’s Hong Kong’s epic trail that is known across the world.

The trail is cut up into ten stages, beginning from Pak Tam Chung and ending in Tuen Mun.

Tai Mo Shan Country Park

Tai Mo Shan Country Park - sunset - hong kong

Home to the highest peak in Hong Kong, Tai Mo Shan Country Park is in the New Territories. Tai Mo Shan Peak is at 957m and is accessible by hiking trail. Reaching the highest peak of any country is a great feeling and worth the sweeping views of inner Hong Kong.

Tai Mo Shan Country Park waterfall in hong kongOn the way to the Tai Mo Shan peak, visit Ng Tung Tai Waterfalls. If you’re going to pick, walk down the steps to the lower falls. If you’re crafty enough, jump in the refreshing water and climb up the mouth. Then you’ll have a middle and second waterfall enclosed in a cave environment all to yourself. Breathtaking!

Lion Rock Country Park

Lion Rock Country Park in hong kong

One of Hong Kong’s earliest established parks, Lion Rock Country Park is in the New Territories too. Lion’s Rock gets its name because of the shape of Lion Rock Hill that at some angles resembles a lion. It is a popular lookout point and is just shy of 500m high. It gives some of the best views of the New Territories.

If you’ve ever wandered around Kowloon City, you’ll always tend to refer back to the high hills that tower over it.

This is a prime example of how it feels to be in Hong Kong and to seek adventure, almost on every backdrop or distant view, there is something more natural awaiting exploration.

Sunset + Lantau Peaks

sunseat peak in hong kong
Sunset Peak

Hong Kong’s third and second highest peaks respectively; they are both doable within the same day. They are essentially next-door neighbours but if you’ve got the energy you can complete this in just over a half a day.
Sunset Peak overlooks Hong Kong International Airport whilst Lantau Peak overlooks Sunset Peak and the Tian Tan Buddha.

Everyone goes to Victoria Peak but that’s just a small walk in comparison. Sunset and Lantau Peaks are the popular and wild peaks to experience in Hong Kong.

The Lantau Trail

lantau trail in hong kong

Stretching over 70km, including twelve stages from Mui Wo to Pui O, the Lantau Trail is arguably one Hong Kong’s premium hiking trails. To many you meet in Hong Kong who are travellers, you won’t hear many who have done it. It takes time and effort and most are avid hikers. If you are one of them then you’ll pass stunning views, pockets of beaches, lush forest, towering peaks and local villages.

Dragon’s Back

dragons back mountain in hong kong

Easily Hong Kong’s most popular day hike; Dragon’s Back gets its name from the shape of the hill like the scales on a dragon’s back. Although it won’t be the strenuous of hikes comparatively with other trails, Dragons Back is certainly worth the experience.

Look out the South China Sea and when you’re starting your descent, make it to Big Wave Beach. It is here it’s enclosed from the rest of the world with the surrounding green hills. Rent a surfboard and catch some waves then grab a beer!

Abandoned Hong Kong

ma wan abandoned village in hong kong

Hong Kong has a bucket-load of abandoned places to visit, waiting for your daring-self to explore. Hong Kong is home to the ‘haunted’ and if you know the right places you can venture into some eerie places.
One of the more accessible abandoned places is Ma Wan Village.

A whole village abandoned and for you to roam around, it’s like a community just vanished without packing anything up. Take a good camera and take some snaps because this side of Hong Kong is unique.

Go with Wild Hong Kong

There is no better way than to experience what Hong Kong has to offer than with Wild Hong Kong. These guys offer some of the best wild experiences in the country with some mentioned above. These include trips to Lantau Peak, Dragons Back, Sai Kung and Tai Mo Shan Country Park.

If you’re heading to Cuba for the first time, you’ll most likely start in the country’s captivating capital of Havana. Arguably one of the most picturesque and instagrammable cities in the world with its vintage old town, iconic buildings and colourful classic cars. This is probably everyone’s first idea about Cuba…

But the Cuban countryside adds a different vision of the country and there’s no better place to experience that than in Viñales.

viñales cuba

Epitomised by its towering mogotes, tobacco fields and sleepy farmers riding horse and cart, Viñales is a different world from the hurrying streets of Havana… And that’s why you have to visit!

Hike in Viñales Valley

Viñales Valley in cuba

El Valle de Viñales is a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, Viñales doesn’t have any particular signed trails to follow, but that’s the beauty of the place – it almost has uncharted territory. However, there is a hike to Los Aquaticos that is seen as the most common.

Surrounded by the lush green and the thick humid heat, if you love to hike then Viñales will be a real treat for you.

Viewpoint at Los Jazmines Hotel

There is one hotspot that many visitors tend to make a checkpoint too and that’s the viewpoint at Los Jazmines Hotel.

Marvel At The Mogotes

mogotes on vinales valley in cuba

Mogotes are towering limestone rocks with a circular top covered with flora and fauna. Quite simply, they are stunning. If you’ve ever wandered the north of Vietnam, you’ll know exactly what we mean.

One of the best things to do is to walk alongside these thundering limestone cliffs as they become closer than a backdrop and marvel in your own echoes.

Go Horse Riding

horse riding at vinales - cuba

With all the natural surroundings in Viñales, sometimes getting around can be a little difficult. Horse riding is the Uber of Viñales and is a popular activity for many visitors who make it here.

Whether you’re galloping to visit some farms or finding a viewpoint for sunset, taking a gentle ride on some of these incredible creatures really lets you see inside the heart of Viñales.

Tobacco Farms

tobacco farms at vinales in cuba

Cuba is famous for its high quality cigars but have you ever wondered where they come from? Well, in the fields of Viñales is one place tobacco is grown on farms and is detrimental to the local farmers income.

Being in Viñales you’ll have multiple chances to go visit a local tobacco farm, try a puff on a traditional cigar and even to buy.

Coffee Farms

coffee farm at viñales - cuba

Viñales doesn’t grow just tobacco for Cuban cigars, it also grows some of the best coffee beans you’ll ever find. Take a trip, by walking or horse riding to some of the local coffee plantations to see how its grown and produced.

Unlike tobacco, coffee is good for you. It’s been scientifically claimed recently that three cups a day is recommended.

Mural de la Prehistoria

mural de la pre historia on vinales - cuba

Rumoured to be a gift to his daughter, former leader Fidel Castro commissioned a giant dinosaur mural painted on the side of the cliffs in Viñales back in the 1960’s. Colourful and grand in its appearance, if you venture into the Viñales fields and mountains you’ll pass it on the left.

In all honesty, it’s a bit of a novelty. Take a few looks, maybe a quick snap and continue your journey…

Natural Cave Pools

Cueva del Palmarito cave near Vinales - cubaWith the heat that the Cuban countryside can make you endure there’s no doubt you’ll break a sweat or two. If you’re making your way to the viewpoint Hotel Los Jazmines then about five minutes past that you’ll come to a small, fairly hidden natural pool.

When we say pool, it’s more like a bathtub that can fit two or three people in. Still, it’ll be rather chilly because of its enclosed location, but we assure you at the time you won’t want it any other way.

Cuevo del Indio at vinales - cuba
The “Cueva del Indio” (Indian Cave)

A little further afield from the centre, Cuevo del Indio, now a National Park, is an illuminated cave popular to visitors staying in Viñales. Discovered by a Cuban farmer back in the 1920’s, there has been numerous archaeological findings here including cave paintings and relics.

Stay In A Traditional Casa Particular

casa particular at vinales - cubaYou won’t fit any luxury hotels or hostels in Viñales – well if you do we don’t know about it. Casas Particulares are the Cuban version of AirBnb. You pay for a room owned by a family.

In Viñales however, the standard price is $30USD per night and you pay for the room, not the person. This suggests it is better to travel in a small group if you want to budget so you can share the room if necessary.

Eat Lobster For $10

eating lobster at vilanes - cuba

If you stay in Cuba’s famed casa particular then you’ll have the luxury option to eat lobster for dinner!

The Cubans know how to eat, so when you do get fed you’ll get multiple dishes to go with. And for the small price of $10USD per head, it’s definitely a bargain.

Climate change, the destruction of ecosystems and the rising sea level are all reasons why some of the planet’s most spectacular treasures will soon disappear…

For this reason, we wanted to share with you a list of 10 places worth visiting before they disappear.

If you decide to go see any of these sights from up-close, remember the importance of protecting and caring for the environment.

Madagascar

Madagascar

This island, located in the Indian Ocean, is characterized by its rich flora and fauna, a result of the destination’s many years of isolation. Deforestation and poachers are two of the main challenges Madagascar faces today.

The Maldives

Maldives

The Maldives are just 1.5 meters above sea level; these islands are in grave danger due to the rising sea level.

Venice

Venice gondola ride

The high water phenomenon in Venice is increasingly more frequent, and as the North Pole melts, the city continues to sink.

Sub-Sahara Africa

Sub-Sahara

The Sahara Desert extends at about 1 km per month, causing the desertification of surrounding areas and essentially “absorbing” the land of Sub-Sahara Africa.

Bangladesh

Due to its unfortunate geographical position, Bangladesh is threatened by increasingly frequent floods caused by torrential rains and hurricanes. The destination also suffers from periods of famine and drought.

The Aletsch Glacier, Switzerland

Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland

Like the rest of the glaciers in the Alps, this too is melting at a rapid pace.

The Tahuamanu Rainforest, Perú

rainforest

This forest is rich in biodiversity; sadly enough, this won’t be the case for long, as more and more mahogany trees are cut down to satisfy the demands of the international timber market. The extensive deforestation has altered the ecosystem and is affecting the lives of indigenous tribes who have lived their entire lives in this forest.

The Belize Barrier Reef

Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef has a rich ecosystem that is threatened by climate change, pollution, increased ocean temperatures, hurricanes and mass tourism. 40% of its coral reefs have already been destroyed.

The Dead Sea

Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is in danger of drying up due to water evaporation, agricultural activities and industrial mineral extraction.

Yangtze River

Yangtze River

This area is home to many plant and animal species, including the giant panda and the Yangtze River Dolphin. Due to massive industrialization and the continuous transit of ships, the river has become one of the most polluted in the world; agricultural development has also caused deforestation in this area.

  • Abandon everything. Leave behind the hectic and stressful daily life.
  • Devote time to take care of your body and mind.
  • Develop a new energy through exercise, meditation, diet and contact with nature.
  • Yoga tourism contemplates all this and much more…

“Yoga is the perfect opportunity to be curious about who you are”

But what exactly is yoga tourism? Which different types of tourism can you find? Where can you practice them?

If you’re a yoga lover and want to know more details, read on and start planning your next holidays in zen mode!

    1. Spiritual journey

Features: Simplicity and purification. Most of the time is dedicated to (rigorous) physical exercise and mind purification.

    Typology: Ashrams.

An ashram is a spiritual hermitage open to everyone in which people follow a strict ritual and live in a community with a simple lifestyle.

The day is dedicated to meditation, yoga, and praying. You will have to follow a vegetarian diet and there are also ayurvedic treatments.

The price can be considered cheap and you can stay in an ashram as long as you want: from a minimum stay of 4 days which are necessary to get into the spirit of the place, for up to one or more months.

The experience in an ashram is very intense: in addition to the physical benefits that are easy visible, you may change the perception about yourself and the world around you.

Where to go: India, but this type of yoga tourism is now widespread in many parts of the world thanks to the work of Tibetan monks.

    Level of preparation: Medium/High.

    Recommended for:

    • those who are on a path of spiritual growth or inner exploration.
    • those that have a good spirit of adaptation and are ready to face a rigorous discipline.
    • those that are looking for a more authentic immersion in the yoga world.
    • those that travel alone or with friends.

    Average price: 70€ per week

What to bring: A book, preferably written by a spiritual guru to enter directly into the ashram’s atmosphere.

    2. Travel for pleasure + Yoga

    yoga retreat

Features: It’s a mix of holidays and yoga. Travel to wonderful destinations where you can practice yoga and at the same time combine other activities and cultural visits.

    Typology: Yoga retreats.

These trips are usually organized by yoga schools, or by specialized tour operators sold in “packages” for limited groups with an average duration of one to two weeks.

The mornings are dedicated to classes while the rest of the day is intended for socializing and traditional holiday activities. Sometimes it’s possible to mix surf or reiki with yoga.

Where to go: Mexico, Morroco, Spain, Turkey, Costa Rica… It’s possible to meditate anywhere in contact with nature.

    Level of preparation: Medium

    Recommended for:

    • those who want to combine fun with mental and physical fitness. It’s perfect for a rest from the daily stress thanks to the physical activities and the healthy vegetarian diet.
    • those who travel alone. Small groups have a very open mind and it’s pretty easy to make new friends that share the same interests.

Average price: 500€ per week without flights.

What to bring: A camera. Between asana and asana (yoga pose) take some time for photos of beautiful sunrises. You’ll see it’s worth it 😉

    3. Beauty + Yoga

    yoga spa beauty

Features: Packages that put together spa, beauty treatments and yoga exercises. Use the Ayurvedic medicine to purify your body and improve the physical appearance.

    Typology: Beauty centers, spas, hotels.

Where to go: Anywhere around the world, but particularly in Kerala, India, the birth region of the Ayurvedic medicine.

    Level of preparation: Low.

    Recommended for:

    • those that want to stay in shape but aren’t yoga fanatics.
    • those looking for exclusive resorts with all types of amenities.
    • those that are willing to spend…

Average price: From 1,500€ per week

United States of America, it’s the alpine tundra of Alaska to the Arizona dry desert and every Florida swamp or Washington evergreen forest in between.

There’s no better way to discover the world’s most unique landscape collection than with a trip to one or more of the USA’s 59 national parks – so what are you waiting for?

Here are the 8 best national parks in the USA.

    Yosemite

This World Heritage Site paved the way for the United States national park system and welcomed over 5 million visitors in 2016. The stunning sequoia groves, granite cliffs, and crystal clear streams at this California park will fill up even the most conservative photographer’s memory card.

    Price: $30.00/$20.00/$15.00 (car/motorcycle/foot or bicycle).
    Hours: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

    Bryce Canyon

The most unique entry on the list isn’t so much known by name as it is from its unparalleled collection of hoodoos. These strangely shaped rock pillars that are left standing from the forces of erosion dominate the park and create scenes you won’t see anywhere else.

The star-gazing is so plentiful here that it has its own astronomy festival, taking place each year in June.

    Price: $30.00/$25.00/$15.00 (car/motorcycle/foot or bicycle).
Hours: 24-7, closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, New Year’s Day.

    Great Smoky Mountains

There’s a seemingly never-ending series of forest ridges renowned for its plant and animal diversity along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee.

From seeing black bears in their natural habitat to the 1500 wildflower species to taking in the mountain scenery from Cades Cove, it’s no wonder this is America’s most visited national park.

    Price: free.
    Hours: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

    Denali

If Alaska is in the cards you can’t go wrong visiting this six million acre park that has barely been grazed by the hand of humanity. Here you’ll find Denali, North Americas tallest peak at 20,310 feet, and a range of low elevation forest all the way up to high alpine tundra.

The wildlife bus trip, a sort of freezing safari, is a great place to see moose, wolves, and the piece de resistance: the grizzly bear.

    Price: $10.00.
    Hours: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

    Grand Canyon National Park

America’s most famous natural landmark is overwhelming on account of its size – the canyon itself measures 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and has a depth of over 6,093 feet.

Its horizontal strata retrace the earth’s geological history dating back 2 billion years – but you’ll only need about a second to drop your jaw.

    Acadia, Maine

The rough and tumble coast off Maine is the location of this national park famous for islands, lobster boats, and the occasional mist.

The 1,530 foot tall Cadillac Mountain is the North Atlantic’s highest point and the first place in the United States to see the sun rise from October through March.

    Channel Islands

Thousands of years of isolation has led to this group of 5 islands off the coast of California to create a unique ecosystem found nowhere else in the world.

A top spot for fishing, surfing, or whale watching. To this day there are still no rental shops or food stores on the islands so those hellbent on self-reliance and a true camping experience will find a gem here.

This well-known yet rare archipelago 906 kilometers from continental Ecuador was once so isolated that it wasn’t accessible by anything but a private or chartered vessel until 1969.

Not exactly a Ryanair destination at present day, the islands now count 116 visitor sites (54 land, 62 scuba diving or snorkeling) that make up one of the rarest tourist experiences this side of outer space.

Here are 8 reasons to visit the Galapagos Islands.

    The Boobies

Yes indeed, these cigar shaped marine birds with dagger-like bills and colourful feet are one of the most emblematic animals of the island, the peculiar name coming from the Spanish word bobo (‘fool’ or ‘clown’).

    Charles Darwin

The man who changed the world with his Theory of Natural Selection is perhaps the first word association made with the islands. It was here in the 1830’s that he observed island to island similarities between creatures with slight adaptations depending on environment.

    Post Office Bay

This incredibly rare method of post delivery differs from the traditional post office in one key area – the post is delivered by other travellers!

Originally a system for whalers spending years at sea to reach loved ones back home, today you can drop off your postcard and leave it up to another traveller heading back to your part of the world to hand deliver it.

    The Giant Tortoises

The largest living species of tortoise in the world was almost eaten into extinction after the permanent settlement of the Spanish in the 16th century. They have a lifespan of over 100 years and today have a population of about 19,000 – up from the low of 3,000 in the 1970’s.

You Can Snorkel with Sea Lions

These charming, sun-tanning sea mammals can grow up to 2.5 meters in length and weigh 250 kilograms. The Galapagos are one of the few places on earth you can see them torpedoing around in vodka-clear water and maybe even get a chilling whisker brush to the arm.

    Pinnacle Rock

On Bartolome Island sits one of the most iconic landmarks of the archipelago – Pinnacle Rock. This entirely upward pointing rock formation overlooks a bay hosting some of the most eclectic marine life in the world like stingrays, sharks, and marine iguanas.

    There’s Nowhere Else Like It

97% of reptiles and land mammals, 80% of birds, 30% of plants, and 20% of marine species in the Galapagos Islands can’t be found anywhere else on earth.

    The Galapagos Penguins

This tiny 2 kilogram penguin is the only species of its kind found north of the equator. WWF estimates put the remaining population at fewer than 2000 making it an incredibly rare and treasured sight.
