How are low-cost airlines so cheap?

The history behind low-cost airlines

Low-cost airlines first made their appearance in 1971 with Southwest Airlines. Following that, it was Ryanair's arrival in Europe that put the term ‘low-cost airline’ on the map. Today there are over 80 low-cost airline companies in the world, characterised by low prices, high frequency routes, short turnaround times and high productivity. The most popular low-cost airlines that fly to and from the UK are Ryanair, easyJet, Norwegian, Vueling and Wizz Air.

So how exactly do these airlines keep their prices so low? The answer is quite simple, they are able to offer attractive prices thanks to their cost cutting methods and optional add-ons.

Are they reliable and safe?

Although they do cut costs, they don’t cut back on safety. Importantly, the Federal Aviation Administration have confirmed that budget airlines are just as safe to fly on as any other airline.

Low-cost airlines are able to offer such attractive prices compared to other airlines due to:

Cutting costs

  • Seats are placed closer together, with less legroom. This allows more people to fit on the aircraft.
  • Money is saved on entertainment costs. For example, by not providing individual TV screens.
  • A standardised fleet of aircrafts allows the company to benefit from economies of scale.
  • The online check-in process reduces the need for staff, and is a way to charge extra to people who forget to do it.

Optional add-ons

  • Food and drinks are an extra charge once you’re on board.
  • Fees are charged for baggage allowance, such as putting a bag in the hold or carrying additional hand luggage.
  • You pay extra to choose a particular seat.
  • Depending on the card used, paying with a credit or debit cardmight incur an additional fee.
  • To avoid queues and ensure your bag doesn’t get put in the hold, you’ll be charged extra for priority boarding.

How much does it cost to go on a trip around the world?

There are many factors that affect what sort of budget you'll need for a round the world trip. The good news is that for many people, it's cheaper to be on the road than staying at home. Some things to consider before working out your budget:

Length and pace of travel

How long do you intend to spend on the road and how many places will you visit along the way? The more frequently you change location, the more money you'll spend.

Type of travel/accommodation

Are you set on a backpacker, low budget lifestyle for your trip, or are you more inclined to seek comfort and luxury?

Where you go

Undoubtedly, some countries are cheaper than others. If you're on a budget, try to spend the majority of your time in countries with a cheaper cost of living, and be concise with your time in the more expensive countries.

As a general rule, budget travellers and backpackers can expect to spend between €15,000 and €25,000 for a year spent travelling around the world.
