The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is committed to making its information and communication technologies accessible to individuals with disabilities by meeting or exceeding the requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended.  Section 508 is a Federal law that requires agencies to provide individuals with disabilities access to electronic and information technology and data comparable to those who do not have disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency.  To meet this commitment, our web templates have been designed to meet or exceed the Section 508 standards and to conform to the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Level AA.

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Civil Rights will apply the complaint procedures outlined in 43 CFR Part 17, Subpart E, which are established to implement Section 504 for resolving allegations of discrimination in a Federally conducted program or activity.

DOI Section 508 Program

The DOI Section 508 Program manages and oversees the implementation of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and ensures information and communication technologies developed, procured, maintained and used by DOI is accessible to everyone. The DOI Section 508 website includes a list of policies, Bureau and Office Section 508 contacts, and Section 508-related references.

Reasonable Accommodations

The DOI and its Bureaus/Offices provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals (employees and applicants for employment) with disabilities, unless doing so would cause an undue hardship. DOI provides Departmental guidance on reasonable accommodations in Personnel Bulletin (PB) 21-03 Processing Requests for Reasonable Accommodation for Individuals with Disabilities.

Architectural Barriers Act of 1968 (42 U.S.C. §§ 4151--57)

The Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) requires access to facilities that are designed, built, altered, or leased with Federal funds. The Access Board is the federal agency responsible for enforcing the ABA. The Access Board's accessibility standards are available on their website  along with  information about filing a complaint .
