Description
Antique art greetings post card
Circa early 20th century
Divided back, golden age 1907 - 1915
Art by Fred Parsons for Raphael Tuck & Sons
The RMS Empress of Japan, also known as the "Queen of the Pacific" was still in operation when this card was made, one of a series called "Celebrated Liners" by Tuck's, UK. This vessel was part of a fleet of Empress ships and she held the record for fastest Pacific crossing for twenty years.
Her beautiful Japanese dragon figurehead was rescued after being discarded during salvage by the Vancouver Daily Province newspaper. It was restored and in 1927 was mounted for public display in Vancouver's Stanley Park.
Reverse side caption:
Fredrick Parsons was an Irish-born visual artist best known for his paintings of ships. A number of his works were published by Tuck's during the early 20th century. He may have been a relation of Sir Charles Algernon Parsons, member of the Irish peerage, and inventor of the compound steam turbine. Being born to a wealthy ship making family would have certainly afforded one lots of time to spend around ships!
