Description
State of Israel: After 2000 years the Jewish people realized their dream of an independent homeland with the establishment of the new State of Israel in 1948. Lying between Egypt and Jordan on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, the country is a hot and arid land. Modern irrigation, however, has made large regions fertile, and orchards and forests begin to give the land a green appearance. The new nation's economy is based on agriculture, but oil refining, chemical production and light industry are also important. Tel-Aviv-Jaffa is the center of the manufacturing industries, while heavy industries is located at the seaport of Haifa. Many of the people, immigrants from all over the world, live together in modern cooperative settlements. The Hebrew language, formerly used only in religious rites and Bible studies, is the official language of the young republic. The frontier with Jordan divides Jerusalem; the modern part is Israel's capital and the Old City belongs to Jordan.
