“There she goes again” Akiyama Chika snorted.

“She thinks she’s so high and mighty just because he’s taken an interest in her” Hatanaka Chitose added.

“Yeah, right” Mizuno Kyoko laughed, “I bet she bribed him into doing it.”

“Maybe she blackmailed him” Nakahara Riho suggested.

“Yeah, she definitely threatened him” Takashina Yurina assured, “there’s no way he would ever want to date the likes of her.”

The whispers of the girls surrounded you as you walked through the hallway. It was always this group that insulted you the most.

You glanced at Takashina Yurina, who gave you a cold glare. She had never liked you to begin with. The fact that you were now dating the boy she had been pursuing made you even more despicable.

The others in the hallway avoided eye contact with you. Some of them gave you cold looks and others rushed past you, unwilling to get involved in your conflict. You walked past Takashina and your group, knowing there was no point in standing up for yourself. There was no one else to defend you anyway.

You looked around for familiar faces, but your “friends” had been avoiding you ever since Oikawa Tooru had asked you out.

No...you had not bribed him or blackmailed him or threatened him. You had done nothing of the sort. To put it simply, you had been classmates the previous year. You had always been kind and helpful to each other. Oikawa had taken a special interest in you this year. You hadn’t talked to him in a while, but he had asked you to join him and Iwaizumi to attend a volleyball match. It had taken you a while to realize your feelings toward the setter of Seijoh.

When Oikawa confessed that he had been interested in you since the previous year, you had been touched. But immediately after accepting his confession, you had been shunned by the girls of Seijoh. Not only had they turned a cold shoulder on you, but they constantly berated you behind your back. Your friends had been terrified by the prospect of being gossiped about and left you.

You lowered your gaze to the ground, your head down.

‘I can’t look at them. I know I’m not worthy to date Oikawa. They don’t have to remind me.’

Speaking of Oikawa, you spotted him at the end of the hallway. He was saying something to Iwaizumi Hajime, who looked angry, as usual. Iwaizumi yelled something back, stamped his foot on Oikawa’s, and stormed away angrily.

“So mean, Iwa-chan!” Oikawa whined, chasing after him.

You smiled. Oikawa was always childish.

You suddenly felt a chill down your spine and had a feeling that Takashina’s group was glaring at you, aware of who you had just been staring at.

You walked away quick to your class, relieved to finally escape the glares of the passerby as you slipped into the classroom. You looked around, hesitating, wondering if you should greet anyone, but as soon as you entered the room, the girls had stopped talking and sat down quietly in their seats.

You made your way over to your seat and sat down, looking hesitantly at the girl sitting beside you. “Good morning, Hana-san” you said quietly.

There was a moment of silence before she responded. “Good morning” she said curtly.

You gave a small smile. There was almost no one who would respond to your greetings but Hana Aika. You were thankful, even if she wasn’t as willing to greet you as you hoped. As class started, you copied the notes off the board without processing what you were writing. You were preoccupied by your own negative thoughts.

When the bell rang for class to end, you stood up to leave. Someone shoved past you, knocking into your shoulder and pushing you against your desk. The contents of your bag spilled to the ground. Mizuno Kyoko wrinkled her nose at you and departed with a swish of her short blonde hair.

Your classmates looked down at you uncertainly, then quickly scurried past, unwilling to get involved in your conflict. You sighed and bent down to retrieve your belongings when a hand reached out to help you.

Your eyes widened, not because someone was giving you a hand, but because you knew who that hand belonged to.

“Why didn’t you tell me, (Name)-chan?” Oikawa Tooru asked, cleaning up your belongings. You didn’t move. It was Oikawa. Your hand hovered over your now packed up bag. Oikawa laced his fingers with your’s. “Why didn’t you tell me that they bother you? Why did I have to hear that from Iwa-chan?”

“I didn’t want to burden you with it” you said.

“You could never be a burden, (Name)-chan” Oikawa said seriously.

“Why did you choose me?” you asked “there are so many other girls to choose from, so why did you go for me? There’s nothing special about me. I’m not pretty or smart or talented. So what made you ask me?”

“Why?” Oikawa repeated, “because you’re real.”

You looked up at him. “Real?”

“You’re not like other girls. They always try to show me a side of them that doesn’t exist. They’re always fake, (Name)-chan. But you, you’re real. You never tried to hide yourself from me. You’ve always been, and always will be the most real to me” Oikawa said.

“Any girl could be like me” you argued “they just need to open up to you.”

Oikawa laughed. “It’s not that simple. I chose you because you’re you” he said, “to me, (Name)-chan is the most beautiful. (Name)-chan is the smartest. And (Name)-chan is the most talented. You’re the only girl that I love.”

You raised your hand slowly to touch his dark brown hair. That was right. Oikawa was your boyfriend. He was always there for you and he always would be.

“I’m sorry” you said.

Oikawa smiled and pulled you to your feet.

“(Name)-chan, remember that you’re flawless. You’re the perfect one for me. So please don’t hang your head when you walk through the halls.”

You looked down. “But everyone calls you the Great King, Tooru. I’m not deserving of you at all. You...you’re amazing. And I—”

You were cut off by Oikawa’s laugh. He put his arms around your waist, pulling you close to him.

“If I’m the Great King, then you must be the Great Queen, (Name)-chan!”

Any doubt that you still had seemed to dissipate into nothingness. Oikawa had called you his Queen. His Great Queen.

You took his face in your hands and kissed him. Your lips brushed his softly as you pulled away. Oikawa smiled and pulled you close, kissing you again. You put your arms around him and melted into the kiss, wishing that this moment could last forever, for this was the only moment where you had truly felt like a Great Queen.

The next morning, you touched your hair dreamily as you walked through the hallways, feeling giddy with happiness. Oikawa’s reassurance had been enough to get you back on your feet.

“Pfft! Look at her, walking like she thinks she’s some kind of queen.”

“Do you see her playing with her hair? Does she think she can somehow seduce Oikawa-kun?”

Your face erupted in a blush and you slowly lowered your hand to grip your bag instead.

“That’s right. She never changes. As if he could actually like her.”

“As if!” The usual bullies laughed in their high-pitched tones.

You were once again tempted to lower your head and walk quickly by, but you shook your head. That wasn’t right. Oikawa had accepted you for who you were. If you didn’t accept yourself, you were just proving those girls right!

You raised your head and looked at them evenly. Their smirks faded away into angry expressions.

You swallowed hard.

‘S-scary.’ You thought as they began to stalk towards you.

The crowd in the hallway dispersed, leaving the girls a clear path in your direction. You stood your ground, clenching your fists tightly.

‘T-they’re so scary...’

Akiyama shoved you and you stumbled back into the wall.

“Hey, do you think we’re wrong or something?” Akiyama asked darkly, slamming her hand into the wall next to your head.

You wanted to shut your eyes tightly and beg for forgiveness, but you took a deep breath and glared back at them.

“Yeah” you said quietly.

Hatanaka laughed. “Why? You don’t like what we’re saying?” She gave you a pout.

“Oh, what are you gonna do? Break down and cry?” Mizuno snickered.

Nakahara crossed her arms and rolled her eyes at you.

“You’re mocking me because you’re jealous, aren’t you?” you asked.

‘Idiot, idiot! I thought you wanted to stay alive!’

“If you don’t like me, just say so and be done with it” you continued.

Oh...you were so done for now.

“What did you say?” Takashina asked, stepping forward.

The rest of the girls became quiet. You could feel waves of anger radiating from the girl.

“I said, you’re jealous of me” you said impatiently, swatting Akiyama’s hand away and stepping towards Takashina. “You could’ve just said you don’t like me instead of trying to bring me down everyday.”

‘I...really have a death wish, don’t I?’

“You blackmailed Oikawa!” Takashina yelled, losing her usually controlled temper.

“I did not.”

“You seduced him!”

“You’re wrong.”

“You don’t deserve him!”

“He doesn’t think that.”

You felt a sudden sting on the side of your face. You stared at Takashina’s outstretched hand.

“T-Takashina!” the other girls gasped, backing away.

No matter how hey had insulted you, this was the first time one of them had physically hurt you.

You scoffed. This was how desperate they were, huh?

You pushed Takashina’s arm down and looked at her.

“Hurting me won’t make Tooru look at you” you said.

Takashina raised her arm again. But you knew it wouldn’t hit you. Because Oikawa had caught her arm.

“Let go! Let—Oikawa?” Takashina gasped.

“What are you doing, Takashina-san?” Oikawa asked icily.

“I—”

Oikawa stepped forward, touching your face where Takashina had hit you.

“I’m fine, Tooru” you said.

“Stop” Oikawa said angrily, turning to the girls, “stop bullying (Name)-chan.”

“But she blackmailed you!” Nakahara burst out.

“She’s just playing with you! She doesn’t actually have feelings for you” Mizuno said.

“You should dump her while you can” Hatanaka suggested, “She’ll ruin your reputation.”

“Any of us would be a better match for you, Oikawa-kun” Akiyama said, stepping forward, “believe us.”

“I don’t know where you got those ideas” Oikawa said, frowning, “but I love (Name)-chan for who she is. She didn’t blackmail me, nor is she playing with me.”

“I...could treat you better” Takashina said, “I would treat you better than her, Oikawa!”

“But I don’t love you” Oikawa shot back, “and if any of you bothers (Name)-chan again, you’ll answer to me” he looked at you, “and don’t you dare hit her again, ever.”

“She’s not good enough for you!” Takashina scowled.

“You don’t get to decide that. I do” Oikawa said, “and I think (Name)-chan is perfect.”

As much as you wanted to continue listening to Oikawa talking the bullies down, but you decided it was about time for you to come out from hiding and confront them yourself. You crossed your arms.

“You heard the truth from Tooru” you said loudly, “so kindly please stop harassing me about him.”

The girls looked at you, their mouths open. For once, they couldn’t say anything.

“Is that all?” you asked, holding Oikawa’s arm, “then we’ll take our leave.”

The two of you began to make your way back to the classroom.

“W-wait” Takashina called, “but, Oikawa...you’re the Great King. How could you go for the likes of her?” she asked weakly.

Oikawa turned and looked at her, then smiled, wrapping his arm around your waist.  “Don’t you know?” he asked, looking at you and smiling before tilting his head towards the girls.

“It’s the Great Queen who makes the King great.”
