The sounds of an average family dinner cascaded throughout the well-lit, rustic dining room. Redundant small talk, incessant chewing from the father and son alike, and the occasional cough followed by an unneeded ‘God bless you’ afterwards from the family’s matriarch. This was the standard eating experience for the Callahan family each night. They sat down, said their prayers, and dug into the plain-jane dish mustered up by Willow Callahan each night. Earl Callahan, the patriarch, would mutter some statement of minor discontent after the first bite without variation, and Willow would playfully smack him on the shoulder before turning her attention to Paul and Beatrice Callahan, their adolescent children.

It was about at this part of their daily routine that something adjusted the pattern, shattered it to pieces. As Earl shoveled a spoonful of heavily salted peas into his mouth, his ears picked up the sound of one of the pasture cows making a ruckus.
