Vane Vusakalais scowled as his Alphess put her arm through his elbow mockingly, as if they were a couple. "You know I'm with Jess, Kate, who I would prefer to go out with to dinner than you," he scowled.
"Oh hush you," Kate chuckled. "We're werewolves, the Alpha pair, going out to a steakhouse. Don't you like steak? Freya knows that Jess can barely handle a 4 oz. Me on the other hand? Well you know," the shorter girl patted her stomach to emphasize.
"Just don't eat out the money of my wallet faster than you eat your dinner," Vane grinned. "Of course… you may just eat both completely."
"Look who's talking mister 6'8 male purebred," Kate raised an eyebrow. They walked on the curb, nearing the local steakhouse as the autumn wind ruffled their scarves and coats. "Sometimes I think your appetite can match mine sometimes." The glowing lights of their destination illuminated the evening world.
"I don't think you want to tempt me," Vane's grin would make imps look innocent. The Alpha pair stepped inside, soon being seated at their table near the window, taking off their extra garments. "So," the Alpha male began. "We were going to discuss pack routes and such?"
"Oh come on Vane, even if we're not going out this is a nice little dinner together as friends," the Alphess rolled her eyes. The male infront of her leaned over, head resting on his knuckles with a shrug.
"You were never the one for long talks with me," Vane clarified matter-of-factly. The waitress walked over, asking for what beverages they wanted, as was common-place for most public eating facilities. With their drinks ordered, Kate tapped her nails dimly on the wooden table.
"I suppose that's true," she sighed. "Though if Jess likes you, I suppose you're not that bad of a puppy after all." Vane got a good chuckle out of that, leaning back in his chair with arms behind his spikey hair with legs crossed comfortably over ankles.
"Everyone likes me," he grinned wolfishly in confidence.
"Bullshit, I sure as Hell don't," Kate shot back mockingly. "I just keep you around to beat on."
"And I you. You're quite bouncy you know, all of my blows are reflected," the Alpha's more English accent began to show through devilishly as Kate's face reddened.
"Yeah well at least my head isn't totally made of meat!" she shot back. He merely laughed.
"Tubby," he sang.
"Meathead!" she snarled. The two werewolves continued to throw the insults at each other until the waitress came over once more and heavily put their drinks on the table to silence them. She looked at Kate and whispered, "I'm sorry about your boyfriend, but please control him…"
"He's not my boyfriend!"
"She's not my girlfriend!" They both shouted their protests at the same time. "And I can't CONTROL him, lady! I need the biggest leash on earth for THAT!" Kate gestured with her hands as she spoke. The Alpha shrugged innocently as if to silently agree. The waitress merely chuckled and pulled out her little notebook.
"Don't order everything on the menu," Vane grinned like a fox, an expression not to be trusted. The Alphess sighed and moved a hand down her face.
"Can I hit him? Please? Just a little," Kate groaned.
"Not unless you want to get kicked out," their old waitress explained. "Now what will you have?" The two hungry Alphas sighed and ignored their small dispute for the moment to discuss what they wanted for dinner.
"And keep it rare, please," the Alphess said. "I like it still kickin'."
"Me too!" Vane cut in, hand rising like a little kid. Their waitress nodded and, finished with the orders, explained it would be ready soon, and left the two to talk.
"I guess you and I are more alike than I thought," Kate smiled.
"Well given that we both are carnivores," Vane shrugged.
"Hm.."
There was silence for a few moments as the stared out of the window, eyes twinkling and gazing up at the crescent moon in the clear sky. "I'm sorry for calling you a meathead," Kate suddenly apologized. "There's a little bit of brain in there somewhere."
Vane smiled at that, looking at his Alphess with amusement. "I'm sorry for calling you tubby… though you still kind of are." He leaned over and, with his long arms, ruffled her brown hair. "But you're MY tubby Kate, and that's just the way I like ya'." The gentle hum of his Western drawl pushed through as his mood lightened, fitting the steakhouse scene perfectly. Kate grumbled a little as her hair was tussled in his hands.
"Well I can't say I like you being a meathead," she clarified, "but I still like you just the way you are, too… I mean when it comes right down to it-" she stopped and blushed, thinking I wouldn't want anyone else to lead the pack with, but stopped. Vane tilted his head like a confused puppy, chin in his hands, waiting for her to finish. Kathrine spoke her thoughts aloud. Vane chuckled and shrugged.
"Well I am a great leader, aren't I?" the corners of his mouth stretched at the tips in a small smile.
"So am I," Kate nodded. "I mean, if we went by usual pack rules, Jess would be in my position… and no offense to my sister, she wouldn't be a very good leader. Especially leader of a," her voice faded into a mere whisper, "werewolf pack."
"True, very true," Vane took a swig from his drink. "You certainly aren't a bad leader. You're like the group's angry little steam puff keeping everyone in line." Kate raised an eyebrow.
"Well when you're not shoving your tongue down my sister's throat you make some pretty good decisions," she clarified. They both laughed warmly. "Though it really is a wonder how we all met up… I mean, 10 people like us in the same college? It's wild! No pun intended…"
"Yeah. Can't say I believe in fate but who knows? We're a big happy family, now. Though I wonder…" He leaned back comfortably, hands behind head, as Kate put her elbows on the booth behind her. "If it all meant something? Like some force drove us all together?"
"I don't know. All I know about mystical forces is that when I die, I'm either going to party in the Underworld with Hades or feast and spar with Odin and Thor in Valhalla… I prefer the latter. But yes, you have a point."
"When you go up to Valhalla, I feel very sorry for everyone in that hall," he chuckled.
"I can say the same to you," she clarified. Their conversation faded into silence once more as their eyes gazed out the window once more, drinking slowly from their glasses. Eventually, the food came, which they began to devour hungrily.
"It's refreshing to go out to dinner with someone eating more than a salad," Vane pointed out with his fork. "Doesn't do so well with our money but hey, you're amusing."
"Thanks," Kate huffed. "Though my sister is more than what she seems."
"I know!" Vane protested.
"No, you really don't. Jess and I have been through more than you think." Kate cut a thick piece of meat from her steak and shoved it into her mouth. After chewing, she said a little clearly, "y' dun ev'n know." The Alphess swallowed and continued, "but yes… you're right. Vane continued to eat as well, his laughs thoughtful as he licked the juice off his lips.
"Your sister is quite the character," the Alpha smiled. "I'm utterly amazed she's put up with you for so long… There are some days I go crazy from an overdose of vitamin K, so to speak."
"Yes, and you are a perfect little drop of Sunshine, Vane," Kate rolled her eyes.
"I am," he sang.
They continued their dinner happily, opening up to eachother with increasing eagerness. Although still somewhat collected due to many human ears and eyes, the Alpha pair of werewolves seemed comfortable sharing some of their experiences that neither knew. Eventually, when finished, they both split the bill evenly and stood, gathering their coats. Outside, Kate shouted, "come on, you big meathead! The others are probably missing us and it's Kama's and Sparrow's turn to run the perimeter!" Vane chuckled and straightened his jacket, running after her in the clear moonlight sky down the street.
"You just don't want to because you're lazy!" he called after her.
"I'll do it tomorrow. I'm Alphess, I can do what I want when I want," she grinned at him. Vane was surprised, but not hesitant from her touch when Kate wrapped her arms around his torso in a hug. "Thanks, Vane… it was fun tonight."
"Ah no problem," he blushed at the sudden act of kindness and ruffled her hair as before. "I think we needed a night out like that; away from Ryan and Fiona bickering or Ita swatting around Kama's tail."
The Alpha pair smiled and, walking in-step beside each other, made their way back to where the others were waiting out near the woods.
