The name ”Hiidenpuoliverinen” (Hiisi Warmblood) originates in old, Finnish religion, where Hiisi originally meant a holy location, where people sacrificed to the old Deities and it was also used to explain mysteries of nature, for example, the mounds of large rocks (Hiidenkiuas) or large holes in the crags (Hiidenkirnu).
Yet, after the main religion spread through the land, the word ”Hiisi” was made a synonym for a place where demonic, evil beings rested and Hiisi now meant evil creatures.
...And you got to admit, even if these horses got their name from the sacred forests and locations, they definitely have a temper of a hiisi!

Hiisi Warmblood originates from the Finland and it’s roots are as old as time – this strong and large horse was originally a riding horse meant for only the nobles, the rich and the army to use. It’s adaptability, endurance and nerves made of steel made it a perfect equine company especially for the soldiers, where as the noble folk enjoyed it’s appearance and frame, and used Hiisi Warmbloods to boast to their friends.
At 16th century, alongside with other Finnish horses, importing Hiisi Warmbloods outside Finland’s borders was restricted by the king of Sweden, as it was a very popular breed that got imported all the way to Lübeck, Germany and spread all around the Europe from there.
To the breed though, being such a popular choice for importing to the foreign lands was a good thing – it got fresh blood into it’s lineage, and many of the breeders wanted to keep the qualities in the breed they had acquired it for. If something, they wanted to make this warmblood even better!
And that’s what they did, now the breed had fresh blood and Hiisi Warmbloods kept imported back and forth from Finland to other parts of Europe, and back once again. It was mixed with other warmbloods and some other breeds as well during the centuries, but the some of the breeders did their best job to keep as much as the original conformation as they could.
Though, as it was to be expected, in some cases Hiisi Warmbloods old conformation got lost in time and so, the formerly popular warmblood breed was more and more uncommon sight in it’s original glory.
The first and only studbook and registry for Hiidenpuoliverinen was opened at the really end of 19th century in Finland. It was organized by the family of Havari, who has it’s long history in breeding and importing Hiisi Warmbloods all over the Europe – and overseas as well, while keeping and restoring as much as the original conformation as they possibly could.

- Head is long with refined muzzle and straight or slightly convex profile. The profile shouldn’t be too convex. A concave profile is a fault. Their longer ears’ tips usually turn inwards in the most of the cases, but ears that point sharply upwards is a variation seen nowadays.
- Neck is long-ish and lean and has very defined muscles - slightly arching neck being also allowed. It is connected to the shoulders higher than your usual warmblood, and the head is carried high. The mane, if not shaved, should be thick and the roots end under the withers.
- Back is short, with prominent withers and slightly sloping croups. Despite the lower croups, tail is still positioned high. The body should be lean, with long and slender legs to crown the impression of an agile sports powerhouse.

Hiisi Warmbloods are known to be fierce companions, ready to overcome any challenge with their respective rider… And ready to be that challenge themselves. They are wary around new people, keeping a respectable distance and studying from afar before deciding if the stranger is safe and worth their attention. It’s not the first time these loyal companions are thought to be arrogant, if they find their own stuff more interesting at that moment than human company.
They are brave to the end and very adaptable to different situations, making them a perfect fit for the former army use – and nowadays, for any sport you want to train them to. Hiisi Warmbloods learn new tricks quickly, but keeping them motivated and interested is a complete different task. They get bored easily if things get too repetitive, or if they don’t get to use their brains enough...
When it comes to the disciplines, where Hiisi Warmbloods really get to use all their potential is three-day-eventing. They can be trained for pretty much any use you could imagine a warmblood breed to be suitable, but mostly you encounter this breed in eventing and cross country fields.

Originally, just like Finnhorses, Hiisi Warmbloods used to have mostly Finnish names, with some exceptions on Russian - and Swedish naming during their respective reigns.
Yet, nowadays as Hiisi Warmblood is met all around the globe, it’s not too uncommon for one to have an English name – or one of a local language, that is.
