Bottle River

Upper Falls, Old Man's Cave - Hocking Hills Park, Ohio

Upper Falls at Hocking Hills is a beautiful sight to see on a warm summer day, but it is even more enjoyable on a crisp autumn afternoon when the sky is mottled with clouds and there is still color in the trees around the falls. We had a particularly wet autumn this year, so the falls that are normally running low at this time of year were still going nearly full force from what I remembered from the previous summer.

Hocking River gets its name from the Wyandot Tribe's name for the river "Hockhocking" which means "bottle river" due to a bottle shaped gorge formed by the upper falls itself. There is also evidence that the Delaware and Shawnee nations frequently hunted in the forest surrounding Hocking River and its many waterfalls.
