Carmen 1

One of two costumes created during a summer course in costume design for the stage. We worked with the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet, and mainly with the characters Carmen and Escamillo.

Carmen is a gypsy temptress who proclaim freedom to love anyone without being bound by relationships.
A qoute from her main song, Habanera: "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle (Love is a rebellious bird)
Que nul ne peut apprivoiser, (That nothing can tame,)
Et c'est bien en vain qu'on l'appelle, (And it is simply in vain to call it)
S'il lui convient de refuser. (If it is convient for it to refuse.)

The dress is loosely inspired by flamenco dresses. We were instructed to design costumes that were neither historical nor modern, but somewhere inbetween. I created a kind of futuristic scenario for my staging.
