The weapons of yesterday & tomorrow:
In the 20th century, perhaps no two rifles defined the nature of global military affairs more than the AK-47 and the AR-15. These weapons, and their many derivatives, variants, and assorted offshoot programs, accounted for a majority of weapons development between the end of World War II and the dawn of the Second Space Age. Although they were both growing close to obsolescence by the time the Interplanetary Cooperative Administration was founded in 2051, they were still used in large numbers by guerrillas, radical militiamen, and insurgent groups of all stripes in the chaotic years of the latter 21st century.
The next few hundred years, far from ushering in a grand revolution in firearms technology, were instead marked by a relative stagnation in such development. When the Mars-Titan War began in 2292, elements of the Titan Pact outfitted their troops with the Sturmgewehr 351, a design steeped in traditions going all the way back to the Cold War heyday of the 20th century. However, the astropolitical order ushered in by the Harrison Accords opened the floodgates to a new era of weapons development, with rifles like the M93 and RS-64 typifying the parallel and opposing military buildup of the ICA and the Alliance of Free Worlds through the middle years of the 24th century and the conflagration of the Frontier Wars.
After the wars ended, firearms advancement plateaued again for roughly a century as the Solar Union focused on rebuilding and expanding its interplanetary empire instead of growing in military power. The emergence of the Martian Federation in the early 26th century changed all of that, and quickly. The R31 accelerator rifle is one of the most advanced weapons ever developed by Martian designers, and it was fielded in large numbers by the Martian Federal Army during the Centauri War. By 2577, this weapon and others like it are the cutting edge of a new generation in weapons technology arming the soldiers of Mars.
