    Cygnus bought his rat from Diagon Alley. His parents thought it might be best to get him something practical-like a dependable owl to deliver messages back and forth between them, but once Cygnus eyed one of the rats in the store, he knew it had to be him. He called it ‘destiny’ or ‘fate’, but his gut told him that the large rat would be the one friend he didn’t realize he needed. At school, he was soon proven right.

    Now, he likes to take Sagittari everywhere he can (even places he shouldn’t). With no other close friends, Cygnus can’t help but admit that his rat has become his best friend and accompanies him to everything.

    At first look, Cygnus seems to be a complete loner. Often seen walking the corridors by himself and disappearing from tables when no one is looking. Though, in conversation, he speaks in a gentle manner and is very easy going. He’s generally pleasant towards anyone, but after a little while it’s unmistakable that his gentle smiles feel just as distant as they did during a first meeting. In truth, Cygnus doesn’t particularly try to make many friends and likes to stay to himself. For this purpose, he doesn’t want to stand out in any way. Although he associates with others as minimally as possible, he tries to be just pleasent enough to others that they don’t start rumors about him but distant enough so that people will leave him alone.

    Cygnus is generally a very serious person, so he often feels awkward with goofy people and misses sarcasm. If someone tells him something or asks a question, he seriously thinks about it and considers everything. In this way, he’s like a sponge that soaks up any information given to him. . Once he’s focused on a subject, his gaze is distant and it’s obvious that he’s taken up by his thoughts.

    Under everything, he’s really a big romantic. His number one passion is Astronomy. Any minute that his has to himself goes to watching the stars and digging up any kind of information he can find about stars. His favorite thing to research are the stories different cultures make for stars, and truly believes that they hold some kind of power over people. Naturally, he believes in astrology and everything that connects to it. If anyone shows any kind of interest towards the stars, Cygnus is more than willing to rattle on for hours-but most of the time he holds himself back.

History

    Cygnus was born to two very much Muggle parents. In his younger years, him and his family moved around all across Europe before finally settling back near his mother’s family in northern Sweden. Cygnus himself barely remembers living anywhere else, but one of his earliest memories was that of watching the Northern lights from his backyard-and with that, the clear night sky above. His family had always lived in cities before, but their house in the mountains was a good distance from any large settlement. Because of this, he’d never been able to see the stars so clearly and never known how beautiful the night sky was. This sparked a deep passion that he has even now.

    With no other siblings, no nearby neighbors, and two full time working parents, he was often left by himself. Good natured and responsible from a young age, his parents never worried about him getting into trouble. Left alone, Cygnus learned how to keep himself busy and during the nights he couldn’t sleep (which was often) and spent hours stargazing. His family encouraged him, buying astronomy books and star charts whenever they came home from work. The three of them lived very peacefully this way for a while.

    Then one day, his parents realized Cygnus was a wizard. It hadn't been obvious right away until Cygnus himself came up to them to show them 'a new trick' he learned. After producing sparks out of nowhere and almost burning down their living room, they remembered hearing about wizards being born from 'muggle' parents. His parents had obviously no way of helping Cygnus ease into his wizardry, but learned as much as they could right alongside their son. It wasn’t long before they found that every young witch and wizard learned their magic at boarding schools. Suddenly his comfortable home life was stripped from him. Cygnus was sent to the Durmstrang Institute, which was luckily not too far from his home, but still too far for him.  His new school was much harsher and rougher than what he was used to and his soft nature immediately singled him out for bullying. As much as he wanted to write to his parents to take him back home, away from everything, he still understood that there was no other way. He already knew his parents were worried about him, so he wrote letters that would comfort them instead. Although his first two years were tough on him, he was able to find ways to blend in and then sneak away; and eventually the bullying stopped altogether. Right when Cygnus thought he’d be able to fit in and finally get comfortable, Durmstrang announced its closure.

    If Durmstrang, a long established and well known wizarding school, was closing due to the growing hostilities between muggles and wizards, then their country was growing more unsafe for their son by the day. For his own safety, his parents decided it’d be best for Cygnus to transfer to the next nearest school as soon as possible-even if that meant transferring in the middle of his third year. They immediately decided to try to write a request letter to the seemingly safest school right now, Hogwarts, and it was approved. His parents, however, stayed behind in Sweden. Before Cygnus could fully understand what was going on, he was suddenly at Hogwarts and even further away from his home.

    Cygnus doesn’t take too much interest in the wizarding world’s affairs in general. Or interest in the muggle world affairs. Or interest in anything outside of his own affairs really. The rest of the world outside of his house always seemed so distant and far away that he never worried about it until he was forced to confront it. Even now, he doesn’t care too much about what’s going on other than that it keeping him away from his family.

Trivia 

• Cygnus’s name comes from the constellation under the same name. The constellation itself is the form of a swan, and is most visible during the month of September - the same month he was born.

• Over the summer between his 2nd year in Durmstrang and his 3rd year in Hogwarts, Cygnus had hit his growth spurt early and hard. Now, he (literally) stands out more than most of his classmates in the same year.

• Likewise, he named his pet rat, Sagittari, after the Sagittari constellation. While Sagittarius actually ended up suiting his rat’s personality, Cygnus’s main reason for naming him this was because many believe that the Chinese astrological counterpart to Sagittarius is the rat. And thus, his rat was named after it.

• His favorite constellation stories are usually those of Chinese origin (especially the one surrounding his own namesake).

• Is actually fairly excited to be able to study Astronomy and Divination in Hogwarts now.

• Writes to his parents often and eagerly waits for their replies.
