Yep... pegged it.

Between the comic title, her mark, the wagon, the poppies, and how Granny reacted to hearing she was around I figured she was just involved in some commemoration of the dead.

When and elderly mare still so full of life and stubborn just shows sad resignation, the death involved isn't hers.  It's a pony she knew... one of a growing number she's outliving.
