Draconology: The secret of fire
Of all the traits that distinguish the Pyrosauria from their draconimorph relatives, by far the most famous is their fire breath.
Fire breathing, or more accurately fire spitting (as it is not connected to the respiratory system), refers to the ability of many pyrosaurians to expel a mixture of endogenously-produced pyrophoric compounds through specialized openings in their mouths, which combust upon contact with oxygen.
Fire spitting is an ancestral condition in this clade, and several lineages within it have modified and adapted it to varying degrees over the course of their evolution. Many groups, most notably the ornithodraconians (bird dragons) and several therosuchians (drakes) have lost this trait over the eons, and while several drake species have retained it, none have built on it to the same extent as the true dragons (Eudraconia).
